About the Position

  • The position is part time: 20 hours/week April through November; 8 -20 hours/week December through March, paid bi-weekly. (Hours to be negotiated with final candidate)
  • Competitive hourly wage, commensurate with experience.
  • Required to attend and manage weekly Tuesday market days, set up through break down.
  • Reports directly to the Birdhouse Farmers Market Board of Directors. 


Qualifications
Farmers’ market experience required with 3-5 years of market management experience strongly preferred. Strong computer, time management, organization, conflict resolution and communication skills are essential. Prior experience involving community relations, event planning, fundraising, marketing, and bookkeeping is desirable. Knowledge of farming and the central Virginia agriculture community is strongly preferred. Familiarity and relationships within the Randolph, Maymont, and Oregon Hill communities preferred.
 

Managerial Duties and Responsibilities
The Manager of Birdhouse Farmers Market (BFM) is responsible for market operations, promotion, site, vendor and volunteer management:
 
Tasks include financial management, bookkeeping and reporting; Market setup and breakdown; volunteer training and supervision; data collection; maintenance of supplies and equipment; planning and supervision of market amenities including children’s activities.
 
The Manager will learn and ensure compliance with market rules, state and city regulations regarding public safety, food handling, and licensing.

Demonstrates strong organizational, administrative, time management and computer skills as necessary to accomplish Market goals. Monitors and evaluates progress on Market goals. Ensures that market, vendor, and volunteer files and historical documents are maintained.
 
Oversees the Market application and approval process of vendors; organizes the annual vendor meeting; visits vendors to build relationships and view properties; and works with vendors to implement ideas to increase the Market’s profitability.
 
Utilizes strong interpersonal skills to manage vendors and to recruit volunteers. Is responsible for orientation, supervision and coordination of volunteers, vendors, and others designated as part of the Market’s weekly activities. Is responsible for resolving any disputes involving vendors or other community members.
 
Works with current community partners and develops new relationships to coordinate projects and issues of mutual interest.
 
Directs and coordinates promotional and marketing efforts including online resources to maximize the Market’s visibility.  Works effectively with the media, the business community, and local neighborhoods to promote the Market.
 
Reports to and works with the Birdhouse Farmers Market Board of Directors. Attends board meetings and keeps board apprised of market progress, challenges, projects and recommendations for improvements.
