The Culinary Gardener is a 1-acre farm business located 10 miles north of Asheville, NC in the Reems Creek Valley. We grow an extensive variety of vegetables, herbs and edible flowers year round and market exclusively to restaurants in Asheville, NC and Atlanta, GA. We focus on soil health and meticulous harvest and processing techniques to produce crops of the highest quality. The farm generates an atmosphere of hard work, collaboration, experimentation and pride for the quality of product we produce.
Job description
This full time position has a flexible starting date between January 21 and February 4, and will go until the end of December, with the opportunity to get a raise and stay on for the 2019 season. Compensation includes a salary plus vegetables. Salary will be based on experience. Housing is not provided. The work week is generally Monday-Friday 8am-5pm with a 30 minute lunch break, but this will vary slightly throughout the season. Expect to work more hours in the spring and summer and fewer hours as the season begins to slow down. In 2019 there will be 4 employees, and each employee will be expected to work one weekend per month. Weekend work will include watering, mowing, harvest, and other small projects. We work in all weather conditions, including rain, snow, strong wind, high temperature and high humidity, bitter cold, and everything in between. We have 2 greenhouses and 5 hoophouses. We work in them and maintain them in all seasons. Applicants that work hard and excel throughout the season will get a year-end cash bonus.
Qualifications
- Applicants must have completed at least 2 seasons of farm work.
- Must have a high attention to detail and high level of organization, and be able to take direction well.
- Must be able to maintain a positive attitude and consistent work flow in all weather conditions.
- Ability to lift 50lbs regularly and perform a variety of tasks efficiently and consistently.
- Must have good communication skills and be able to thrive in an intimate working environment.
- Must be willing to go the extra mile for the sake of the farm and the business.
Regular responsibilities include: plant propagation, planting, harvest, cultivation, washing/packing, bed preparation, tractor work with a BCS walking tractor and various implements, cleaning bins and maintaining organized work spaces, tools and supplies.
