Job description

Position Overview:
This new position of SPAN Shelter Kitchen Manager (aka “Shelter Chef & Food Justice Coordinator”) will create healthy, inclusive meals for clients staying at the SPAN domestic violence emergency shelter, as well as opportunities for education about food stability and healthy eating for clients to take with them beyond shelter. Position will oversee all aspects of food and food service at shelter including shopping, meal preparation and compliance with federal food programs.


Responsibilities Include:
• Menu planning and meal preparation for nightly dinners. Will serve 25 – 30 people using proteins and vegetables donated to organization.
• Preparation of cold breakfast for weekly morning meals.
• Manage kitchen by maintaining cleanliness, managing food waste and supporting clients as they complete weekly chores.
• Coordinate kitchen related recycling and composting.
• Create weekly shopping lists of staples for clients and supplemental items needed to prepare meals. Coordinate food and kitchen supply purchases within specific budget.
• Manage community, state and federal food programs including regular reporting and keeping meals, kitchen and food storage areas in compliance with program guidelines.
• Managing and growing relationships with community partners including community gardens, restaurants, grocery stores and food stability programs.
• Coordinating food-related volunteer groups.
• Working with clients and staff to assure kitchen is stocked with food that is healthy and inclusive — meeting the cultural, religious and health needs of each client.
• Support clients’ food needs beyond shelter by offering and/or organizing healthy cooking demonstrations, education about food justice and stability, helping clients access food programs.
• Support an environment based in respect, the utilization of ethical communication, and adherence to the organization’s non-negotiables.
• Other duties as assigned by the Shelter Program Director or Executive Director.


Qualifications:
• Culinary School preferred. On-the-job training in commercial kitchen accepted.
• Ability to work independently.
• Flexibility to work in dynamic environment and with changing resources to meet the food needs of clients.
• Must work comfortably and respectfully in an inclusive environment serving clients of all genders, sexualities, racial and economic backgrounds.
• Knowledge of, or willing to learn about, domestic violence and trauma.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of clients and the physical location of the safehouse.
• Knowledge of federal food programs and ability to maintain program standards.
• Ability to collaborate with outside agencies, community partners and volunteer groups.


Pay and Benefits
• Annual salary is $36,000.  Excellent benefits including subsidized health insurance, reduced-rate Eco-Pass, generous vacation time, and work in a dynamic and diverse setting.
