Company description Urban Roots, a 50-year-old nonprofit organization, seeks a full-time, dedicated person for the management of six crop-intensive urban agriculture sites. The Market Garden Program engages youth and the greater community in sustainable urban agriculture through the growing, marketing, and distribution of vegetable crops which supply a 40-member CSA, Farmers Market, wholesale markets, our Cook Fresh program and neighborhood initiatives in East St Paul. Urban Roots engages youth on the East Side of Saint Paul through a paid internship program. Teen participants develop work and life skills, operate a micro-farm business, explore careers & college opportunities, and engage in entrepreneurship, cooking, public speaking and social/environmental advocacy. The Market Garden Program Manager works under the direction of the Executive Director to carry out the following responsibilities:

  • Manage daily farm operations in collaboration with the Education Manager: site prep, plantings and maintenance of crops, watering, weeding, harvesting, washing, packing, tool & general site upkeep for visual neighborhood aesthetics
  • Execute weekly CSA program, farmers market stand, wholesale delivery, and other food distribution channels throughout the growing season
  • Provide training and daily supervision of Market Garden Program staff and youth interns in agricultural work, CSA operations, and other projects during the summer & academic year
  • Manage and maintain purchases of seeds, plants, tools, equipment, walk-behind tractor, irrigation, work vehicles and site/building projects
  • Coordinate with Education Program Manager to provide hands-on urban agriculture education experiences for youth interns, school groups, volunteers, professionals and the greater community
  • Support Urban Roots programs & staff in the execution of program related events, tours and partnership programs
  • Record keeping and information management for harvest, sales & distribution tracking and program evaluation
 

Qualifications/Desired Experience:

  • 3 years minimum experience managing a production focused vegetable operation and selling through a CSA program, wholesale and/or farmers market
  • Commitment to and practice in organic and sustainable farming methods, including the unique challenges of farming in an urban environment while maintaining aesthetics for public viewing
  • Experience managing staff, youth and volunteers in program operations and farm work
  • Experience operating and maintaining tools and small farm equipment
  • Strong relationship building skills with staff, youth, community members, partner organizations, business partners, city & government agencies and other professionals in the field
  • Good written and oral communication skills necessary for marketing, maintaining communications, tracking budgets and reporting
  • Experience designing and facilitating hands-on farm projects, tours and workshops
  • Flexible personal schedule in peak growing season to manage urgent needs (watering etc.)
  • Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds, bilingual a plus
  • Self-starting, collaborative, ability to multi-task and manage multiple deadlines
  • Enthusiastic, creative, committed, team player, flexible and fun
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. on a regular basis
  • Valid Driver’s License for transportation of crews to work sites, ability to drive 12 passenger vans
  • Agree to background check
Compensation: $42k-$46k DOE, plus health insurance (50% paid), paid vacation, holiday & sick time. This position is full-time with a desired start date of mid-February. This position requires flexibility in hours due to seasonal demands with some weekend, holiday and evening hours.
