Concrete Jungle, an Atlanta-based nonprofit founded in 2009, recovers the abundance of ignored, fresh produce growing on our streets, yards and parks to meet health and nutrition needs of our homeless and food insecure population.  We do this by:

  • Mapping fruit trees
  • Educating and engaging volunteers to harvest fruit and work on our farm
  • Creating technology to monitor ripening of trees
  • Cultivating vegetables to donate on our urban farm in Southwest Atlanta
  • Gleaning from farms and orchards at the end of their season
  • Engaging local shelters and soup kitchens to make fresh, local produce more accessible
 

 

Since 2009, Concrete Jungle has donated 93,564 pounds of produce (374,256 servings).

Job description

Concrete Jungle is looking for a 40 hour/week Program Manager to work in the office and in the field, managing our food pantry educational program (PEEL) as well as our in-town picking program.  Job expectations below

For PEEL:

  • Implement curriculum for weekly taste tests, food prep and cooking classes at food pantries and soup kitchens
  • Manage relationships with our partners at soup kitchens and food pantries
  • Coordinate produce deliveries from farm or fruit trees
  • Facilitate 1-2 events per week at soup kitchen or food pantries
  • Manage interns and volunteers during pantry demos and soup kitchen classes and cooking classes
  • Evaluate program efficacy through surveys and interviews
  • Work with volunteer committees to help develop curriculum and metrics of success for the PEEL program
 

For in-town picks

  • Identify new fruit trees
  • Monitor fruit trees
  • Plan fruit picks and communicate with volunteers via email, social media
  • Lead volunteer groups on weekly fruit picks or farm day
 

Other responsibilities may include:

  • Volunteer and donor data management
  • Grant-writing and reporting
  • Tabling and presentations at community events
  • Leading events on the farm
 

Position requirements

  • Strong communications and leadership skills: comfortable speaking to and leading groups as well as talking about Concrete Jungle mission
  • Strong organizational skills to meet program benchmarks on time
  • Self-directed approach to work
  • Ability to communicate, interact, and be sensitive to a diverse group of individuals from different socioeconomic backgrounds and mental abilities
  • Flexibility to pivot programming as seasons change and needs differ between partner agencies
  • Enthusiastic and positive personality despite adversity in the hard task of changing a complicated food system
  • Reliable transportation and ability to transport all class materials (including produce)
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds without strain

Pay starts at $35,000 for full-time employment.
