Company description Harvest Tide Organics is medium-scale farm located in Bowdoinham, Maine that markets vegetables through a pre-boxed, delivered CSA, wholesale partners, and our in-town farm stand.  We grow on approximately 16 acres of fertile, alluvial soil along the Kennebec River and Merrymeeting Bay in a tight knit community of other small vegetable and fruit growers.  Our farm is certified organic by MOFGA and believes strongly in the value of organic and sustainable means of vegetable production. The position of Wash and Pack Assistant Manager is new to the farm this year, after a year or two of identifying a need for strong, non-distracted management in the washing and packing of our produce for all our customers.  The position entails working alongside Bethany (the farming partner who oversees harvest and marketing) in running the day to day operations of the wash/pack. As this is an assistant management position, one can expect guidance from the farm owners over the practices and protocol of the position, and can also expect to oversee the work of other employees and to be responsible to some extent for the training and work of others.    

The responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Work in tandem with Bethany on harvest and pack days to assure the timely and efficient washing and packing of vegetables according to Harvest Tide’s protocol
  • Execute and maintain GAP and FISMA (food safety) practices as laid out in Harvest Tide’s Food Safety Plan
  • Oversee the packing of vegetables in preparation for CSA pack days and oversee the efficient and accurate packing of wholesale orders according to delivery schedule
  • Oversee other employees in the wash/pack including training and enforcement on quality standards, meeting of specs, speed and efficiency of movement
  • Maintain records according to wash/pack protocol including harvest volumes, pack-out volumes, and inventory of produce in storage
  • Maintain inventory of packaging and wash pack materials to assure that the farm always has adequate quantities in stock
  • Keep up with and delegate “sidework” associated with maintaining a clean and efficient workspace
  • Communicated shortages and overages with Bethany to be sure that adjustments to distribution can be made
  • Assist in early morning harvest activities and other activities on farm as needed, particularly on non-pack days
 

Qualifications:

Required –

  • 1-2 years working on farms with experience on the distribution side of production or in another closely related food field
  • Demonstrated organizational and multi-tasking skills, ability to follow priorities
  • Basic familiarity with food safety principles and the ability to closely follow and enforce guidelines related to them
  • Demonstrated managerial experience, ability to lead others and enforce standards
  • Commitment to professional and constructive communication with co-workers, employers, and other staff
  • Ability to follow strict protocol regarding the washing and packing of produce, ability to take constructive criticism to improve outcomes in the wash/pack
  • Flexibility to work other farm positions as needed, and demonstrated experience in other areas on the farm

Compensation:

  • $13.00-14.50/hr depending on experience.  This is ideally a multi-year position, with room for higher pay and more responsibility in future seasons with success in position
