Reports to: Camp Director & Executive Director
Hours: M-F, 9:30am-5:30pm (Part-Time)

Position Overview:
Camp ANV’s Food Justice Education Program is designed to provide our Leaders in Training (LITs) with the knowledge and resources to increase their connections to food security and environmental justice, learn farm-to-table cooking methods, bridge lessons with career pathway building, gain leadership opportunities, and learn how to increase their overall quality of life.

Our Food Justice educator will instruct the LIT’s off site at our newly acquired garden at the Oakland A’s Stadium! At this site our students will be able to experience planning, planting, harvesting, and selling foods that are good for our health and our communities, from the 20 beds on site. In addition, they will have a chance to learn about the basics of nutritional health and have any questions answered. Furthermore, we will discuss how food can play a leading role in building community.

The Food Justice Instructor will specifically focus on providing instruction on farming, community food system development, and leadership opportunities to Camp ANV LITs.

Job Responsibilities:
Camp ANV serves Oakland children ages 5-15. Since 2012, our eight-week Summer Camp, and our Fall, Winter, and Spring camps offer these opportunities for Bay Area youth:
• Provides a safe space for local youth to learn the business of sustainable agriculture
• Conducts activities that promote fitness
• Teaches students healthy cooking and nutrition
• Offers students the opportunity to complete arts, science, and reading projects
• And develops financial literacy by depositing earnings from the harvest into bank accounts that can only be used by students for educational purposes.
• MWF are club days at Tassafaronga Rec Center; Tuesdays are swim days; Thursdays are field trip days. The standard program model runs 3 hours every club mornings (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday), with 30 min of additional prep time allotted before and after each lesson. Collaboration time and resources via ANV’s Farm Manager can be made available as needed.

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Supervision and facilitation of Leaders in Training
• Deliver Food Justice/ Farm-to-Table lesson to up to 15 students in an urban farm setting for 3 hours.
• Work with ANV’s staff to create an appropriate curriculum for each session; lesson plans to be broken up by week. ANV offers countless resources for food justice curriculum. This will be discussed upon interview.
• Maintain organized daily attendance with Lead Counselor (paper)
• Report incidents or challenges to supervisors and complete necessary paperwork
• Incorporate elements of community empowerment, social justice, and food sovereignty into curriculum
• Include farm-to-table and career pathway connections

Desired Qualifications:
• 1+ year of experience working with youth ages 11 and up.
• Youth leadership development experience and skills.
• Interest in teaching youth about the importance of self-care and staying active to maintain an overall healthy lifestyle.
• Enthusiastic, able to work quickly in a fast paced environment, detail-oriented, responsible, and focused.
• Interest in teaching children and adults about the importance of cooking and eating well and a willingness to support all aspects of our farm to table programs.
• Must have an exceptional and cooperative work ethic, excellent communication skills, and the ability to rise to the occasion with a positive attitude when unexpected tasks need to be completed.
• Bilingual proficiency is highly desired.
• Able to lift up to 50 lbs, and perform physical, outdoor jobs in inclement weather.
• Experience teaching in an interactive, outdoor, project-based environment.
• Interest and knowledge of food systems and organic sustainable farming.
• Excellent organization, communication and follow-through skills.
• Maintains appropriate professional boundaries in working with teens.
• Ability to think critically and creatively.
• Ability to work as part of a team in a collaborative environment.
• Passion for food justice, dismantling racism, youth development and urban farming!
• Looking for individual with experience working with young people and the ability to teach a multidisciplinary youth program at a farm. Will lead teens in daily farm work and facilitate workshops on science, nutrition, hunger, cooking, work readiness, food justice and food politics activities.
• Ability to travel and work on the farm, as needed.

Licenses / Certifications / Registrations
• Attend and pass Camp ANV Orientation + First Aid/CPR Training
• Valid driver’s license or photo ID
