Sustainable Nantucket is a non-profit organization established in 2000 that is cultivating a healthy Nantucket by building a more locally based and self-reliant local food system and a stronger island economy.  We are actively expanding sustainable agriculture, on-island farm growth, encouraging entrepreneurial cottage industry, and helping to create new networks for our local agri-business community.

Farm to School (F2S), a program of Sustainable Nantucket, teaches lifetime lessons to island children in nutrition and environmental stewardship through the hands-on process of growing, harvesting, cooking and eating in the classroom, garden, cafeteria, and farm fields.

Job description

Farm  to School Garden Coordinator – Full time, Seasonal, Paid

Sustainable Nantucket is seeking a Farm to School Garden Coordinator to work in our Farm to School Garden this season. The position is for 30 hours/week from June to August and 20 hours/week from September to October.

Under the direction of the Farm to School Manager, the Farm to School Coordinator will plan, implement, and oversee the growing, harvesting, and maintenance of the Farm to School Garden--the Joyce N. Furman Youth Garden. They will work in partnership with the Farm to School Manager to develop garden-related curriculum, instruct Farm to School programs including Farm to School Summer Camp,Half Day/Day in The Garden and Harvest Dinner. Additionally, they will work with the Farm  to School Manager to develop material for and promote the Harvest of the Month Program, teach the Farm to School Middle School Apprenticeship Program and uphold the mission of Sustainable Nantucket and the goals of the Farm to School Program.


After two seasons of successful work, there is an opportunity for promotion for the Farm to School Garden Coordinator. At this point their responsibilities would include, but not be limited to, an opportunity/expectation that the Garden Coordinator will take on a project that will further their professional development as well as benefit the Farm to School program.

This position will be available June 1st – October 31st

Desired Skills:
  • Previous experience and/or education in gardening, horticulture, permaculture, and/or sustainability (or a related field)
  • Interest in learning about agriculture, nutrition, and teaching youth and the community about the local food system
  • Desire to learn or improve agricultural skills
  • Experience working with children and enjoys working with children
  • CORI Authorization (can be completed after hiring)

While Sustainable Nantucket will help provide contacts for pursuing finding seasonal housing, ultimately housing on the island is the responsibility of the accepted candidate. Compensation this position is : hourly, $15/hr + Application instructions
