Job description

This role is a hands-on management position overseeing the execution of cultivation, harvesting, drying and extraction operations on Sunsoil’s 50-acre organic certified hemp farm.  There will be direct engagement in development and implementation of backend systems and processes as we build upon the operational foundation to further solidify our position as the industry leader in quality.  To be successful in the role, you will need to embrace working in a collaborative team environment with agility – sleeves up pursing a shared goal, embracing ambiguity, daring to try.  The high-growth startup environment we’re operating in creates a unique opportunity for the right individual to broaden their skillset and experience while influencing business results in the moment.  This position will be based in Hardwick Vermont.     

 Operations Management 

  • Oversee cultivation, harvesting, drying, and extraction operations
  • Create daily workorders to deliver weekly business objectives
  • Plan and facilitate daily team meetings to communicate and monitor work activities
  • Capture daily activity data for input into backend systems
  • Maintain orderliness and inventories of supplies, tools, and equipment needed to achieve business objectives
  • Develop and manage preventative maintenance program for critical equipment and tools
  • Oversight of production-related expenses to ensure cost control
  • Establish agricultural and extraction performance metrics - provide regular reporting to key stakeholders
  • Create workplace health and safety program to deliver zero incidents target 
  • Assist in development, implementation, and maintenance of key operational SOPs
  • Support implementation and maintenance of broader quality (cGMP) and regulatory programs, and deliver operational adherence
  • Collaborate with VP, Agriculture to create annual crop plans
  • Participate and provide inputs to planning and budgeting processes
  • Identify opportunities within daily operations to reduce complexity, increase responsiveness, improve quality, and reduce cost
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to evolve the organization through development and adoption of new strategies, processes, tools, and responsibilities
  • Commit to personal development and growth by actively engaging in individual development initiatives and applying developmental thinking within the context of the role


People Management 

  • Hands-on supervision of up to 15 permanent and 60 seasonal employees
  • Partner with HR to plan and recruit staff to meet operational needs within budget
  • Develop a high performing team of permanent and seasonal staff
  • Manage performance reviews, incident reports, and other personnel-based documentation
  • Support and promote a diverse and inclusive work environment where all voices are heard
  • Develop and conduct employee training programs


Qualifications:

  • Passion for working in a values-based, mission driven, high-growth startup
  • Minimum 3-5 years’ managerial experience in an agricultural and/or manufacturing environment
  • 3 years’ experience in a FDA cGMP food manufacturing facility
  • Experience in organic farming techniques
  • Proficiency with farm and manufacturing equipment
  • Strong organizational, project management, administrative, and budgeting skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills bringing positivity & professionalism to all interactions
  • Effective employee coaching and development skills
  • Able to identify and define issues, lead root cause analysis, and develop and manage corrective action plans
  • Experience with development and implementation of SOPs and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Successful implementation and management of OSHA compliance programs
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite – Excel and Word
  • Experience with ERP and other supporting business systems


Working conditions:

  • Active agricultural and manufacturing site with varying terrain
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Some work outside normal hours will be required - flex to seasonal demands
  • Ability to work on your feet 90% of the day in a physically demanding environment
  • Able to safely and comfortably lift 60lbs overhead
  • Active driver’s license required
  • Up to 5% travel may be required
