Assistant Cheese Maker/ Barn Chore Lazy Lady Farm

  • Date Posted March 01, 2019
  • Location Westfield, VT
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description Lazy Lady Farm is a small goat dairy and cheese operation located in northern Vermont.  We have been in business since 1987.  We milk 40 registered Alpine and Saanen dairy goats and produce about 375 lbs of cheese per week.  We ripen the cheese in two underground ripening cellars. The farm is off grid and electricity is made with solar panels and a wind generator. The goats are pastured in the summer months on 13 rotational grazing plots. The farm is located near the Canadian border and near a major ski area called Jay Peak. The largest local town is Newport which is located on Lake Memphremagog. Job description Lazy lady farm is currently looking for an assistant cheese maker and barn person.  The work week if Sunday through Thursday.  The job involves ladling lactic cheeses into forms, affinage work, shipping, wrapping cheeses, moving cheese from cheese room to cheese caves, washing cheese forms, barn chores that involve feeding and milking.
  • Sunday starts in the barn milking goats and then into the cheese room to wrap cheese and haul cheeses to cave and move cheese from cheese room to cure room.  Hours 6:30am -1:00pm
  • Monday starts at 7:00am and is hauling cheese from the cellars to the cure room where the cheese gets packed for shipping. After cheese is picked up, work in the cheese room is unmolding cheese and washing forms, wrapping cheese and some affinage work of washing washed rinded cheeses or brushing rinds in natural rind cellar. Work day is over around 1:00
  • Tuesday is ladle lactic cheese called thin red lines, then wrapping or hauling cheese to cave.  Hours 7:30- 2:00
  • Wednesday is ladle lactic cheese, either bonapartes, la roche or pyramids.  Unmoulding cheeses, washing forms etc 7:30-1:00
  • Thursday is milk goats am then into the cheese room for various cheese stuff.  6:30-1:00.  Some outside farm work

We provide no housing.  Work is varied and interesting.  We make a wide variety of cheeses that are challenging and creative. We have a wide assortment of rinds for those who are inspired by such events. We produce about 300-350#s of cheeses which then consist of 700 small pieces of cheeses per week. We are also now making sheep and mixed sheep milk cheeses through purchasing sheep milk from a friend a few miles from here who milks 120 ewes.

The herd of goats is a beautiful registered group of alpines and saanens with over 30 years of a intensive breeding curriculum.
The farm is off the grid so life is a bit simple and complicated as living off the grid has its challenges and draw backs.

We do not offer housing, but housing is available in the area. Long term commitment is appreciated as there is so much to learn and change is not a favorite thing for me.  The farm is in the northeast kingdom and is a very rural area.  One must be comfortable with this. Biggest cities such as Burlington and Montpelier are over 1.5 hours away.  Westfield is only a few miles from the Canadian border so a passport or enhanced drivers license would be a plus.

Prior experience would be preferred and required.  Resumes and references are required.
The job opening is immediate as my assistant now is needing to leave due to her partners change of work.  Compensation this position is : hourly Application instructions
