Farm Apprentice Pork Hill Farm

  • Date Posted March 07, 2019
  • Location Ossipee, NH
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job type Internship/Apprentice
Company description Pork Hill Farm grows Certified Organic produce on 7 acres.  We deliver our produce to restaurants, grocery stores, caterers, and summer camps in and around New Hampshire.  We have a 50 Family CSA.  We work with other farms in NH and Maine to offer the Foothill Farm Alliance Winter CSA.  The FFA also cooperates to offer CRAFT visits to all our farms to increase the learning opportunities for apprentices. Internship description

We have a great opportunity for people interested in learning how a small organic farm functions: seeding to transplanting, maintaining crops, composting, turning fields, the organic certification process, harvesting, marketing, and developing a local foods business. Our work is diversified and changes with the seasons in a pleasant way.

When apprentices arrive at the farm the greenhouse will be full of seedlings and we’ll be hustling to get those plants in the ground.  Our major tasks will be planting and prepping fields with compost and soil amendments. We’ll set up irrigation, build raised beds and install black plastic to reduce weeding.  We work together to teach apprentices the skills necessary for farming.

We start harvesting in June with head lettuce, salad mix, radishes, turnips, and expand the list every week to include cucumbers, squash, zucchini, kale, parsley, flowers, onions, cabbage, tomatoes, carrots, peppers, etc.  Our harvest season continues into January when we are harvesting for the Winter CSA.  Most apprentices work with us into November.

Farm work will include:
weeding
mowing
mulching
trellising
setting up irrigation
harvesting
planting
greenhouse work
fertilizing
cultivating
harvesting
washing produce
and much more

We expect flexibility and a good attitude ready to handle the challenges of demanding work. Apprentices who work the whole entire season, April – November will have a week paid vacation. We expect apprentices to commit to a time period and follow through with their commitment. We expect a positive contribution and friendliness. We expect mistakes, and the willingness to do things again. We expect apprentices will enjoy the experience and have fun.

Also we expect you to have a drivers license.

Apprentices receive housing, farm produce, and a stipend.

Compensation this position is : stipend / non-monetary compensation
