The Trustees is an organization with a fascinating past and an exciting future. Our places are open to all and we thrive by involving as many people as possible in what we do. Founded in 1891, by a group of visionary volunteers, we preserve, for public use and enjoyment, properties of exceptional scenic, historic, and ecological value in Massachusetts and work to protect special places across the state. We have helped protect more than 50,000 acres, including 26,000+ acres on 117 reservations that are all open to the public. We are a nonprofit conservation organization funded and supported entirely by our visitors, supporters, volunteers, and more than 60,000 member households.
 

About SummerQuest at the Crane Estate

Summer Quest is set at the beautiful Crane Estate in Ipswich, MA. The property sprawls over 2,200 acres of dunes, barrier beach, tidepools, pine forests, salt marsh, and grassy fields; offering a varied environment for exploration. As a camp we value environmental education and stewardship and strive to instill these values in the campers, all while having lots of fun! We have a variety of families that attend our camp from the North Shore area and work with many community organizations to serve many families through scholarships. Each week at SummerQuest is based around a different “quest” theme, from a week of wizarding to exploring the arts and history of the estate, to being stranded on a deserted island. For more information, check out our website here: SummerQuest

Summary of Position:

The Camp Educator is a seasonal role with a rate of pay of $12-$13 per hour depending on experience. The typical schedule for the full time Camp Educator is a 40-hour work week, 8:30am – 4:30pm Monday through Friday (8:30am-12:30pm if part-time) for the season, June 24 – August 23. Additionally, a week of training (4-5 hours per day) the week prior, June 17-June 21 is required. The Camp Educator is primarily responsible for the daily execution of the camp programs and activities and the supervision of campers aged 4-15 years old, depending on the assigned age range. Camp educators are expected to contribute collaboratively to the development of camp activities and are given creative freedom to direct the experience of campers in their group. 

Essential Functions:

• Direct supervision and safe keeping of campers

• Daily execution of programs designed to encourage campers to investigate the Crane Estate’s unique identity from the standpoint of place – with a focus on history, ecology, and culture.

• Swift and appropriate handling of camper behavioral and health issues including proper reporting.

• Collaborative generation of activities and projects that represent our weekly “quests”

• Management of photo and video content

• Active participation in all camp activities, program development sessions, and camp evaluation meetings.

• Other duties as assigned with or without accommodation

Minimum Qualifications:

• Working towards a degree in education, science, humanities, or other relevant course of study (Bachelor’s degree preferred)

• Experience working as a camp counselor, classroom teacher, or informal educator with children ages 4-15 (experience in environmental education preferred).

• Special interest in nature-based education, especially in a coastal environment.

• Physical and mental wherewithal to teach outdoors, sometimes under difficult circumstances.

• Ability and desire to work with children of varying abilities and from underserved communities.

• Familiarity with the Crane Estate and The Trustees of Reservations

• Outgoing, positive demeanor with a willingness to learn and bring unbridled joy and enthusiasm to work every day.

• Valid driver’s license required for driving TTOR vehicles.

• Desired but not required:

  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate or equivalent

  • American Red Cross CPR Certificate for the Professional Rescuer, or equivalent

  • American Red Cross Standard First Aid Certificate or equivalent

Working Conditions:

Variable outdoor weather conditions.  Ability to lift 40 pounds required.
