Tradition Market and Garden is a unique garden center and marketplace located in Atlanta. In addition to offering sustainable garden maintenance and landscape services to local residents, we operate a nursery using organic growing methods. We care for and sell a variety of vegetables, herbs, natives, fruit trees, and shrubs, and offer seasonal educational workshops in our demo garden.

Job description

The Garden and Nursery Intern(s) will be an important member of our garden crew through the duration of the 2019 growing season and will assist the team in garden installations and maintenance, groundskeeping, and nursery operations. Tasks range in starting seeds, watering sales plants, repotting plant containers, installing raised garden beds, cultivating soil, and perennial plant care. Some light retail may be required from time to time. The ideal candidate is a team-player who is currently enrolled in a program related to landscape design, agriculture, or horticulture. Experience with plants is a plus, but is not necessary.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support nursery staff in growing operations
  • Maintain soil and compost inventory
  • Pot-up containers and planters for customers
  • Assist crew on off-site garden installations and maintenance
  • Option to assist our lead sales associate at a local farmers market on Saturdays
  • Some light retail customer service from time to time
 

Desired:

  • Candidate is detail-oriented, punctual and a team-player who is motivated to work with plants in outdoor conditions, including the Georgia summer heat.
  • Must be enrolled in a landscape design, agriculture, or horticulture program.
 

This is a great position for a student who is seeking a hands-on opportunity to grow in the following areas:

  • Planting, watering, fertilizing, pruning, plant propagation, weeding
  • Garden tool use and care
  • Nursery production and planting schedules
  • Plant identification, including Georgia native plants
  • Organic growing methods, including pest management and organic soil amendments
  • Herb and perennial care
  • Companion planting
  • Pest and beneficial insect identification
 

Schedule:

  • mid-March through October, flexible depending on schedule
  • Part-time 10-12 hours per week during semester with potential to increase up to 20-30 hours per week during the summer
  • Must be open to work on weekends
