Position Description
The Market & Communications Coordinator’s work priorities will fluctuate across the year, with more hours dedicated to market operations from May to October and more hours dedicated to communications and outreach from November to April. This position works closely with both the markets and communications teams, with a direct reporting line to both the Director of Communications & Outreach and the Market Operations Manager, based on various job tasks.

The Communications Coordinator supports the Director of Communications & Outreach in external communications efforts, including marketing and promotion, weekly newsletter and social media content, and building partnerships in our market communities. The Communications Coordinator works closely with the markets team on market promotion and outreach.

The Coordinator works as a member of the market management team. Market management serves as the front line of FRESHFARM at our markets. Market managers play a key role in shaping the success and growth of FRESHFARM markets and work as part of a team in a fast-paced and dynamic market environment. Managers are invested in and inspired by the success of their markets, and are responsible for executing market operations; interfacing with farmers, neighborhood partners, and customers; creating a vibrant and friendly market; and ensuring accurate reporting and use of food assistance benefits programs.

Primary Responsibilities


Communications (November-April, 70% of total work time; May-October, 30% of total work time)

  • Support the Director of Communications & Outreach to develop and execute an outreach and promotion plan for markets, including social media presence, market promos, flyering, and events.
  • Coordinate with market managers to develop schedule for outreach and promotion activities such as tabling events, market neighborhood networking, and flyering.
  • Write the weekly market update newsletter and contribute to the monthly organizational newsletter.
  • Create content and manage Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts.
  • Update and maintain the FRESHFARM website.
  • Communicate regularly with farmers and producers to promote their products and tell their stories effectively via our newsletters, website, social media, and outreach efforts.
  • Design print and digital collateral for markets and programs.
  • Promote donor campaigns through email and social media.
  • Support other fundraising activities as necessary, such as the annual FRESH Food Drive, restaurant percentage days, fundraising events, and more.

 

Market Operations & Farmer/Producer Relations (May-October, 70% of total work time; November-April, 30% of total work time)

  • Manage the day-to-day execution of assigned markets, including but not limited to: transporting equipment and supplies to market; coordinating logistics and physical setup/breakdown; administering transaction services.
  • Work with various partners to seamlessly integrate market-based Programs (Matching Dollars, Chef at Market, Gleaning) into market operations and promotions.
  • Enforce FRESHFARM Rules & Regulations fairly and consistently with all farmers and producers, deciding if and when to involve the Market Operations Manager for further action.
  • Ensure the safety of everyone at market by enforcing all safety rules, keeping an eye out for hazards, and taking action as necessary.
  • Ensure the market tent is presented according to brand standards and for best visual impact.
  • Ensure accurate and timely submission of market reports, coupon reimbursements, and logging of absent vendors.
  • Monitor market statistics, including sales numbers, market fees, and customer counts.
  • Act as a liaison with farmers, ensuring effective communication and support.
  • Create and maintain an extraordinary customer service experience for the public and farmers.
  • Serve as a skilled ambassador of FRESHFARM’s purpose and mission to the public.
  • Create a vibrant community at market by becoming familiar with the neighborhood and population, working with community partners, and creating a welcoming environment for all.

 

Required Skills & Strengths

  • Excellent written, verbal, and editing skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines at once.
  • Skilled at relationship management with market teams and farmers and producers.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
  • Some photography skills preferred.
  • Customer service and retail experience is preferred.
  • An ability to think on your feet and a demonstrated track record of being proactive and anticipating needs.
  • Foreign language aptitude is a plus, specifically Spanish and Chinese.

 

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • 3 - 5 years of relevant work experience.
  • An ability to work weekends and/or evenings; a desire to work outdoors, including during inclement weather; an ability to lift 50+ pounds.
  • Food and agriculture experience or education preferred. Farmers’ market or on-farm experience is ideal. Food safety manager certification preferred.
  • Cell phone required. Access to a vehicle preferred.
