Drumlin Farm is a Mass Audubon wildlife sanctuary and working educational farm located 18 miles west of Boston and Cambridge. We raise crops on thirty acres and market produce through a farmstand, a weekly farmers’ market, wholesale accounts, and a spring, summer and fall CSA program.
At Drumlin, we are committed to farming sustainably. Our crop rotation includes fallowing with green manures, applying compost made on the farm, and careful monitoring of soil organic matter and fertility. We do not irrigate or use black plastic mulches. All beds are open or mulched with straw.

Job Summary
The Assistant Farmer works with the Crops Manager to steward Drumlin’s crop fields and leads aspects of Drumlin Farm’s wholesale accounts, farmers’ markets, and maple sugaring operation.
Responsibilities
- Manage wholesale and farmers’ market harvests: write harvest pick-sheets; help direct the team during wash and pack for wholesale and market harvests; prepare and drive the box truck for deliveries and markets.
- Serve as the primary staff representative at markets: coordinate volunteer market helpers; create attractive market display; professionally engage customers; clean and stow all materials at the end of the market; coordinate the donation of extra market produce.
- Professionally lead all customer contact for wholesale accounts: create twice-weekly sales e-mails; seek out and set up new accounts; create invoices with QuickBooks.
- Plan and implement Drumlin’s annual maple sugaring operation: lead volunteers in collecting sap, evaporating, and bottling the syrup; coordinate educational programming related to sugaring and assist in the delivery of educational presentations; coordinate the cleanup and stowage of sugaring equipment.
- Perform field and greenhouse work related to Drumlin Farm’s year-round crops operation.
- Assist the Crops Manager with crop and field plans, seed and material orders, set-up and break-down of the farm stand.
- Assist the Crops Manager with training the team in their field and wash station tasks as well as their CSA, market, and restaurant duties.
Minimum Qualifications
Two seasons of farm work, experience managing wholesale accounts and farmers’ markets, experience driving a box truck. Ability to lift fifty pounds and do physically demanding work. Ability to work a variable schedule. Requires First Aid and CPR certification upon hire. Requires successful completion of a CORI and SORI and a valid driver’s license.
Compensation
This is a full-time position open March 15, 2019. Salary is competitive, commensurate with experience, and includes health, vacation and retirement benefits. On-farm housing is available.
