AmeriCorps School Farmer Common Threads Farm +1 more

  • Date Posted May 17, 2019
  • Location Bellingham, WA
  • Category Agriculture / Education
  • Job Type Full-Time
Company Description

Common Threads connects kids to healthy food through hands-on, seed-to-table educational experiences (gardening, cooking, and eating!) We want kids to grow up making food choices that are good for their bodies, their communities, and the environment.

Most of our programs take place on public school grounds, during the school day, in collaboration with classroom teachers and food service staff. Additionally, we offer after-school gardening and cooking programs and summer camps in our school gardens, in low-income apartment complexes, and at our urban farm site.

Common Threads coordinates a state-wide collaboration of AmeriCorps Food Educators in partnership with several other nonprofits: Concrete Farm to School, Coupeville Farm to School, Lower Columbia School Gardens, and Oxbow Farm and Conservation Center.

The school farmer position is available at our Bellingham site only.

Job Description

The AmeriCorps School Farmer teaches gardening and cooking classes to kids and also serves as a peer advisor to AmeriCorps Food Educators whose passions for connecting kids with healthy food are strong, but whose skills in gardening and farming may be less strong.

We know that when kids eat better, they learn better, act better and feel better.  We aim to  increase the likelihood that kids will make healthy food choices as they age, and decrease the likelihood of food related illness such as obesity and diabetes.

The ideal candidate will have significant farming experience, and a love of teaching both peers and kids.

Common Threads is  currently recruiting  for three school farmers who will serve in Bellingham, WA  from August 16, 2019-July 31, 2020.  AmeriCorps Service Members receive a stipend, health insurance, food stamps (if eligible) and an end of service educational award of $6095.

Applicants are reviewed on a rolling basis, with positions open until filled.  If this looks like a good fit for you, please do not delay in applying!
