Job description

Youth Food Educators will:

  • Coordinate and teach food/nutrition classes with Kindergarten through 6th-grade students using engaging, hands-on curricula for Seattle Public Schools students experiencing food insecurity
  • Deliver dynamic lessons in variable settings: elementary school classrooms, afterschool programming, and in garden spaces
  • Coordinate and teach food/garden classes with diverse groups of youth at Solid Ground’s giving garden at Marra
  • Steward school garden spaces and assist with Marra Farm maintenance and production
  • Collaborate with Community Food Education Staff to coordinate events, promotions, and community level systems changes for health
  • Administer and grade survey assessments, enter and track data, complete reports in a timely manner
  • Coordinate and manage volunteers in delivering programming in alignment with Solid Ground antiracism approach
  • Perform program duties as it applies to the AmeriCorps position, including weekly food ordering, laundry, dishes, and inventory
  • Participate in professional development, Anti-Racism Initiative work, and contribute to program development
  • Assist in other Community Food Education direct education including Cooking Matters classes for teens, adults, and families.
 

This position is contingent on funding.

Qualifications:
  • At least 18 years old (by Oct. 1, 2019) with high school diploma/GED
  • AmeriCorps service members must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or legal permanent resident alien of the United States
  • Experience and/or passion for leading and teaching youth, preferably youth experiencing low-incomes
  •  Ability to interact with children, adults, and families from various cultures, ethnicities, and races, as well as a commitment to challenge institutional racism
  • Detail oriented, organized, ability to manage time independently
  • Ability to serve independently, and in variable environments
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to serve respectfully and collaboratively with a small team
  • Computer literate (MS Office Suite,  Social Media)
  • Knowledge of nutrition, cooking, food security, and gardening
  • Valid Driver’s license and willingness/ability to drive own vehicle with mileage reimbursement or program vehicle with volunteer passengers to class site.
  • Proficiency in Spanish, Vietnamese, Somali, Oromo, or another language spoken by recent immigrants to Seattle a PLUS!
Salary & Benefits:
$1,450 monthly living stipend (before taxes) and $6,095 educational award at end of service. Health insurance and childcare program (if eligible).
