For the 2019-2020 growing season, we’re looking for a farm apprentice to assist us in all aspects of our farm business. This not only includes physical labor in all kinds of weather, but also the management of complex production and marketing systems.
We’re seeking a highly motivated person who is already thinking of starting their own project in the future and wants to gain experience in the management of a small-scale vegetable operation. This person will be looking to learn from our methods and will also be able to contribute their own perspectives and ideas to our daily work. It is our goal to support our apprentice in gaining the skills and confidence necessary to launch their own small farm project.
This is a 9-month apprenticeship with approximate start and end dates of September 2019 and May 2020 (dates can be flexed based on the right candidate's needs). The schedule will include 45 hours of work per week with two days off per week.
Responsibilities:
- Soil preparation and amendment
- Direct seeding and greenhouse seed starting
- Management of drip irrigation system
- Transplanting
- Harvesting, washing, and packing produce
- Weeding
- Preparation and application of biofertilizers
- Assistance with delivery and customer service
- Collection of production data
Requirements:
- At least 2 years of study (formal or informal) of sustainable agriculture principles and practices
- At least 1 season of experience working on a small-scale vegetable production farm
- At least 1 year of experience working in customer service or sales
- Intermediate Spanish preferred and strong interest in expanding Spanish language skills
