Farming highlights:

Café AT POND HILL FARM CULINARY INTERN

Internship Details: Culinary interns will spend most of their time (average four days/week -this includes weekdays and weekends) working in The Garden Cafe preparing lunches and will be responsible for the daily set up, operation, cleaning, and closing of the kitchen area as directed by the chef. These duties include but are not limited to preparation of soups and farm vegetable side dishes, short order cooking, dish washing, and advance preparation of food items in accordance with production requirements. These processes must be held to our quality standards while maintaining a safe, sanitary work environment, ensuring quality and consistency by following recipes and production and portion guidelines. 

Interns will also participate in special events. Multi-course plated dinners are scheduled over the season and interns may take a larger role in each subsequent dinner. Other events throughout the season may include hors d'oeuvres displays, pig roasts, and casual buffets. 

Although your focus is working in the Garden Café, there is allotted time weekly to work in other areas of the farm. Assignment to specific areas will be based on your interests/goals and farm needs. This will be discussed in depth during the interview process.

Skills Desired: As a culinary intern it is preferred that you arrive with some basic cooking skills and knowledge of proper sanitation and safety practices.  Interns need to be prepared for a challenge and to take on a significant degree of responsibility in our fast-paced kitchen. Commercial cooking is physically and mentally demanding, but fun and rewarding too! We expect our interns to be self-motivated, hard working, drug free, and non-smokers, and have the following characteristics:

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Previous culinary experience not required but preferred

Educational Opportunities:
For those candidates selected, opportunities exist to design, prepare, and execute a course at a Farm to Table dinner for up to 60 guests; while maintaining  proper prep levels with fluctuating business due to seasonality.

Your primary focus will be working in the fast paced kitchen with a weekly opportunity to work in other areas of the farm; vegetable production, vineyard, brewery, canning kitchen and farmer’s markets.  You will have the opportunity to learn a variety of aspects of farming.  Learning objectives will be provided for each area of the farm. Reading and viewing of videos may be suggested in some areas.

Meals: Interns prepare their own breakfast lunch and dinner. They are welcome to any produce they pick from the fields on their own time. Food staples are provided. There is a discount on food from the Farm Market and Garden Cafe.  One meal is allowed free of charge during a day working in the cafe.  Communal dinners are common among interns staying on property.

Stipend: $175/week plus a $25 per week bonus upon satisfactory completion of internship. Extra income can be earned if shifts are taken in our Tasting Room and Dining Room (21 years of age preferred to serve in our TR & DR)
Housing:  On property housing options are provided as part of compensation. Wi-fi and washer/dryer are available.
