Culinary Arts and Garden Educator The Breakfast Project

  • Date Posted June 03, 2019
  • Location San Francisco, CA
  • Category Culinary / Education
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description

The Breakfast Project is a non-profit culinary arts program serving the students of Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy, a public elementary school in the heart of San Francisco’s Castro District. We integrate hands-on cooking classes into the fabric of school life, connecting students more deeply to their own bodies, each other, and their local communities.

Our work is rooted in three main values:

  • All children are capable and competent. They gain important life skills when working with real tools and real ingredients.
  • Children deserve not only to be fed, but to be nourished. We exercise our right to eat joyfully and healthfully.
  • Food is community. Breaking bread with our neighbors strengthens bonds within our school and becomes a force for good in the wider world.

The BAYAC AmeriCorps Culinary Arts and Garden Educator works within the community at Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy (HMCRA) to bring hands-on food and garden-based education to a diverse group of students in grades K-5. The role involves designing and teaching lessons, collaborating with school staff, and maintaining the kitchen classroom and outdoor classroom as safe and effective educational spaces. The Culinary Arts and Garden Educator reports to the Director and works closely with the Principal of HMCRA.

The successful candidate will demonstrate initiative, a passion for working with young people, flexibility, comfort with ambiguity, the ability to stay organized, and identify as both an extrovert and an optimist.

Responsibilities

  • Co-teach daily culinary arts classes (morning program and school day) for students in grades K-5
  • Lead daily garden-based classes (school day) for students in grades K-5
  • Mentor individual students in and out of class, model respect and curiosity for learning, and encourage students’ interests and talents
  • Collaborate with grade-level teachers on curriculum design
  • Maintain the physical space of the kitchen classroom and outdoor classroom, as well as supplies and equipment
  • Lead the school-wide initiative to care for three chickens on school grounds
  • Contribute to a safe, sanitary, and food-positive environment

  • Communicate regularly with educators and students’ families about The Breakfast Project’s work
  • Represent The Breakfast Project to the wider community
  • Complete administrative tasks (e.g. reflection, data reporting) in a timely manner

*Please note that the addition of the garden education component to this AmeriCorps role is a pilot for The Breakfast Project during a time of transition at Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy. The school will be undergoing construction, including in the area of the current edible garden, during the 2019-2020 school year. By combining what were previously two roles into one, we hope to better integrate the science lessons students experience in the outdoor classroom with the edible social studies experience they have in the school kitchen.
