Job description
Farm Camp Educator
OVERVIEW
Morris Farm Trust is seeking a Farm Educator for this summer’s Farm Camp. Farm Camp is a day camp for children ages 4-12 held at our 50-acre campus that includes a barn, hen house, community garden plots, greenhouse, fields rotationally grazed by organically-raised Jersey cows, forests, trails, a yurt, campfire site, farm store, and an indoor learning center with a commercial kitchen. Campers care for farm animals, harvest food they grow themselves, and participate in a wide range of activities including fiber arts, cooking, and baking. The camp is small by design, with just 20 children attending each week-long session.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Farm Camp Educator will be responsible for all aspects of camp life:
- teaching groups of children ages 4-12
- leading animal, gardening, and games and learning activities
- leading cooking and baking activities
- overseeing snack and lunch time
- communicating behavior or medical issues to the Camp Director
- welcoming and supporting volunteers to the farm (farmer guest speakers, community volunteers, youth counselors in training)
- communicating with the resident farmer concerns and needs of the farm animals and garden beds
QUALIFICATIONS
- Degree and/or experience in environmental education, experiential education, or a related field.
- Enjoys working with youth and has a passion for cultivating engaging group experiences.
- Experience with and/or knowledge of agriculture and food systems.
- Experience with crafts, cooking, and baking preferred
- Highly responsible, self-motivated, flexible, and capable of working outside all day in all weather
- An abundance of patience for working with children, a good sense of humor, and strong work ethic
- Acquire CPR/First Aid certification before the first day of camp (July 1, 2019)
- Be able to successfully pass a background check
- Be 18 years of age or older and graduated high school by June 2019
DURATION OF EMPLOYMENT AND REQUIRED HOURS
Seasonal/Summer
The position runs for six weeks, Monday July 1, 2019 through Friday, August 16, 2019 (no work July 4-5). The work day is Monday-Friday, 8:00 am until 4:00 pm. Compensation depends on experience, ranging from $10 to $14/hour.
