Farm Apprentice Full Sun Farm

  • Date Posted June 13, 2019
  • Location Asheville, NC
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job type Internship/Apprentice
Company description Full Sun Farm is a small family farm located in the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina, just outside of Asheville, NC.

Vanessa purchased the farm in 1997. She started with much the same focus we have now, growing delicious produce and beautiful cut flowers without using synthetic fertilizers or chemicals. Then and now, we sell the majority of our products  straight to our community through the local farmer's markets. In 2001, Alex joined Vanessa and we started our CSA.

Our focus now includes raising our two daughters, on continuing to learn and teach about farming and on having fun doing it. Farming is way too hard not to enjoy it!
While we grow mostly produce, about a quarter of our income comes from our cut flower business. We market our flowers through you-pick buckets, we-pick flower buckets for DIY Brides and at the farmer's markets. Internship description You will share in all farm projects as one of our apprentices. This includes:
  • greenhouse work
  • planting
  • cultivating and harvesting of vegetables and cut flowers
  • pest management
  • machine maintenance and repair
  • work with CSA member
  • selling at farmer's markets
  • record keeping
We are looking for apprentices who enjoy physical outside work in all kinds of weather and being tired at the end of the day. They are enthusiastic about learning about farming, farming systems and plants and they are excited to get stronger, to learn to work smarter and faster not harder.  Experience farming is not necessary, but a sense that farming/gardening/food is likely to be somewhere in your future is. The position goes until the end of October.

Most days we work side by side with our interns and are always available to answer questions and explain the why and hows of our operation. We lead weekly field walks to observe and discuss field and crop conditions, have extensive on-farm library, offer local farm visits, a small garden plot for intern experimentation, and are CRAFT members.

Right now we are looking for 1 person to fill the last spot in our 4 person crew.

Some one who is positive, self-motivated, enjoys getting the details right, who can work alone or in groups, is willing and maybe excited by the idea of living out in the country with limited cell phone service and is engaged enough to ask questions will get the most out of this apprenticeship. Compensation this position is : stipend / non-monetary compensation
