Kitchen/Production Coordinator Shaker & Spoon

  • Date Posted July 18, 2019
  • Location Brooklyn, NY
  • Category Production
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description

Shaker & Spoon is a small but fast-growing food business with a kitchen in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. We produce monthly curated cocktail kits (think Blue Apron for craft cocktails) and ship them all over the country. Our small and dedicated team is focused on continuing to grow the company and create unique, fun products.

We pride ourselves on running an ethical company that sources high-quality products from other small and medium-sized companies, donates both products and money to charity, and treats people with dignity and respect.

Job description

Who are you?

A dedicated, detail-oriented, and self-motivated problem solver who’s interested in building something alongside us. Good communication and great organizational skills are a must. Ideally you’re a grounded team player, able to roll with the punches when things don't go as planned. You’re attuned and always listening/observing, able to identify the core of an issue quickly and to offer solutions. Versatility and flexibility will definitely help—you're able to wear many hats and to juggle various tasks with ease.

What will you be doing?

You'll be part of a lean, passionate team, helping ensure that our operations are smooth and functional. Your main job will be carrying out our day-to-day shipping of kits and individual products, running our kitchen and keeping it marvelously organized, helping with our monthly production runs, and organizing (and eventually leading) smaller production runs, while working directly under and assisting our CEO, COO, and CMO.

This is a great, full-time job for someone looking to build their career in a meaningful small-business setting, who’s interested in growing along with a company and creating a foothold within it. Ample opportunity exists to prove yourself and move on up the ladder. An interest in cocktails is not required!

It’s important to note that a large portion of this job will be without onsite supervision at our kitchen. There will need to be a lot of trust involved on everyone’s part and open communication between you and various members of the team. Our small team is very friendly and communicative but we’re also somewhat geographically scattered, so please keep that in mind, and be comfortable communicating via chat/text/phone with various team members as needed.

We’re looking for someone who can excel as part of our team but also individually without much of a leash. Hours do not have to be strictly 9–5, you can decide what specific hours work best for you, but they do need to be consistent week to week. A large part of the job is receiving deliveries and shipping our products, so you will have to be at the kitchen in Sunset Park on a daily basis mainly during business hours. At times, there will be weekends and possible nights. We’ll do our best to find a balance (you should expect 1–4 weekend days per month—with weekdays off to offset those!).

We have systems in place for how things work, but there’s always room for improvement, and we hope to be able to benefit from your fresh eyes and ideas (we’re always open!) while also showing you what has worked so far and what hasn’t, why, and what we need going forward. Our company is deceptively complex because there are so many variables and moving parts, and we’d really like to find someone who is great with details and who can manage lots of disparate information simultaneously.

Lastly, please note that this job will be quite physically demanding at times. There will be 50+ lb boxes to lift and large pallets to maneuver. This isn’t the majority of the job by any stretch, but it is an important requirement.

Main Responsibilities

  • Coordinating our kitchen—managing all inventory and keeping it consistently up to date, making sure the space is in good working order and well organized, maintaining and cleaning equipment as necessary, keeping track of and ordering as needed our standard kitchen supplies
  • Performing day-to-day shipping operations (approx 2–6 hours per day, with heaviest volume mostly early in the month, particularly on Mondays); liaising with the customer support team to ensure proper shipments
  • Managing, tracking, and accepting deliveries to the kitchen (meaning pulling pallets off trucks, helping trucks maneuver into the loading dock, pushing pallets along lengthy hallways, and operating a manual freight elevator)
  • Liaising with temp staff for our monthly production runs—currently 4–6 days per month on roving dates with about 16–30 ppl per day. Deftly handling employees’ oft-changing schedules and availability with flexibility and good humor, organizing/keeping track of all staff info and emails, and keeping tabs on the payrolling company (Employer of Record) to make sure all temp staff get paid smoothly and properly
  • Data entry/keeping track of monthly purchasing/checking in with COO and CEO to make sure everything that needs doing gets done
  • Running errands and making purchases as needed for CEO, CMO, and COO.

Requirements include:

  • Exceptional organizational skills
  • Great communication skills—written and oral
  • Strong attention to detail while being able to see the big picture
  • Good sense of what you don't know or understand and ability to ask pertinent questions
  • Sense of urgency while maintaining calmness and collectedness
  • Ability to quickly and creatively problem solve, prioritize, and adapt
  • Flexible, agile, able to deal with ambiguity
  • Ready to conquer any task—must be a team player
  • Must be able to lift 50+ lbs—this is a very physical job at times—and to maneuver a pallet jack (or learn how)
  • Previous food industry experience a PLUS
  • Access to a car and/or ability to drive manual transmission a MAJOR PLUS
Compensation this position is : salaried, varies DOE, $35,000.00 - $45,000.00 Application instructions
