Company description The Hawaii Institute of Pacific Agriculture's (HIP Ag) mission is to practice, teach, and deliver regenerative agricultural education programs. HIP Ag provides agriculture and nutrition education to students grades K-20 and supplies fresh produce to its community through restorative farming methods.

Established in 2008, HIP Ag provides programs primarily in Kohala on the Big Island of Hawaii on it's working farm. HIP Ag currently serves individuals of all ages and backgrounds from Hawaii and beyond through its programs, weekly farmers market, and community events. HIP Agriculture works to support the Kohala district who has set a goal to produce 50% of the food it consumes and re-establish local agricultural education programs. We do this through providing a K-20 Agricultural Education Pipeline & Community Agriculture Initiatives that include in-school programming, farm field trips, community events, Farm to School (F2S) & Garden to Cafeteria (G2C) coordination, and local food production and aggregation. At our main campuses, Halawa Farm & Starseed Ranch, we cultivate a diverse collection of native Hawai'ian and Polynesian plants, tropical fruit orchards, perennial vegetable and medicine crops, and a market garden where we grow food for our local farmers market. We practice permaculture and regenerative agriculture farming techniques and raise small scale poultry, livestock, and bees.

Job Description:

At the Hawaii Institute of Pacific Agriculture our mission is to practice and teach regenerative agricultural education programs. We are seeking a qualified individual to direct our Farm, Apprenticeship and internship programs. Our farm serves as our living classroom for field trips, workshops, and in depth farmer trainings. The position is responsible for all farm operations and will lead and further develop the year long apprenticeship. 

HIP Agriculture is looking for hardworking, motivated team member who is passionate about increasing Hawaii’s food independence and training a new generation of farmers. The farm director will work with executive director, farm manager, and apprentices to strategically grow non-profit farm revenues thru crop production and sales, nursery sales, and some landscaping and orchard installations. 

The position oversees successful development and implementation of year long apprenticeship program directing successful student learning outcomes, program evaluations and managing apprenticeship labour to successfully grow farms long term financial sustainability. 

The compensation package includes salary, exclusive Kohala housing, and local, organic produce from the farm. HIP Agriculture’s farm is located in the historic Kohala district with properties in the Halawa and Niulii neighborhoods. The area has epic hiking trails, waterfalls, and ocean access.
 

Areas of Responsibility

Program Management: 20%

  • Manage the Agriculture Initiatives and Apprenticeship programs grant execution, fulfillment, and tracking. 
    • Lead the planning and evaluation with the Executive Team and Farm Managers to further develop and implement the Agriculture Initiatives and Apprenticeship programs.
  • Apprenticeship:
    • Ensure that appropriate organizational and program impact assessment systems are in place. Keep track of the data for internal and external assessments and reports.
    • Organize guest teachers for the Apprenticeship Program.
    • Prepare and teach classes for the Apprenticeship Program.
    • Assign readings and group projects for the Apprenticeship Program.
    • Develop and maintain community stakeholder relationships related to Agriculture Initiatives, F2S and Apprenticeship programs.
    • Outreach: Further develop connections with university and city colleges statewide increase the number of students from Hawaii. 
    • Conduct Monthly check-ins with Apprentices.
  • HS Internship
    • Work with Executive Director to identify and interview candidates from the HS Mentorship program. 
    • Develop pre and post surveys. Keep track of adequate data for reporting. 
    • Incorporate Interns into the weekly schedule and make a mentorship rotation with apprentices.
    • Support the management of the HS Interns in the field. 

Farm Management: 70%

  • Work in-field with farm manager to co-lead crop production and team
  • Oversee and support Farm Managers and Apprentices
    • Manage Farm business, work to increase sales, maintain production and quality control. 
    • In collaboration with the Farm Managers set the weekly/monthly schedule. 
    • Ensure farm and health and safety training manuals and protocols are up to date and being maintained.
    • Develop and maintain systems with the HIP Ag Farm Managers to ensure food production and health and safety protocols are maintained. 
    • Manage farm staff training, safety certifications, evaluations, and professional development.

Financial Management: 10%

  • Approve and tag receipts to be reconciled with our bookkeeper. 
  • Manage sales and invoices. 20 
  • Develop financial models for Farm Sites and manage all budgets for site activities.

Educational Background 

Bachelor’s degree in an Agriculture related field. 

Masters Degree in Agriculture is prefered. 

Skills/Experience 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Excellent attention to detail. 
  • Minimum 3 years of Farm Management experience.
    • Experience with Agroforestry and Market Gardening preferred.
    • Tractor and large equipment operation experience preferred. 
    • Beekeeping experience preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of Agricultural Education experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of project and team management experience.
  • Experience in grant reporting and tracking. 
  • Skilled in Word, Excel, Google Docs, Quickbooks and Square.
  • Must hold a valid drivers license. 

Work Demands

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work 8 hours in the field doing manual labor. 

Compensation Package $40,900/year

Salary $25,200

Housing $14,400

Annual Produce Box from Farm $1,300

One Year Contract
