Shop Guide The Meadow

  • Date Posted August 06, 2019
  • Location New York, NY
  • Category Business / Culinary
  • Job type Part-Time
Company description

The Meadow was founded by Mark Bitterman in 2006 out of a shared love for food, culture, and travel. Before opening his first shop, he'd spent the greater part of two decades traveling throughout Europe, restoring chateaus in France, eating perfectly salted grilled steak at a roadside stop somewhere in the Pyrenees, and generally exploring and eating everything in sight ... and maybe causing a little trouble along the way. Mark came back to the United States and opened his first shop on the sleepy (soon to be very bustling) little street of N. Mississippi Ave in Portland, Oregon. It is here that he began to explore craft made salts, gourmet chocolates, handmade cocktail bitters, all of which we carry in our shops today.

Each shop location is brimming with world-class experts in craft finishing salts, artisan chocolate bars, cocktail bitters. Meet our Shop Guides here.

In addition to chocolate, salt, and bitters, we are a full service florist and offer fresh cut flowers and bouquets daily.

Job description We sell rad things from rad people all around the world. We want people to bring happiness home. As a vendor, we serve as ambassadors to artisan salt-makers, craft chocolate-makers and chocolatiers, bitters makers, and more. We have a role in educating and sharing with our customers. Shop Guides need to be passionate about food and embrace the idea that customer service is not something you do 'to' people. We encourage warm and organic interactions based on trust. You'll have to be comfortable and confident selling a $25 bar of chocolate and then wiling to push a broom at the end of the night, or walk a load of bar towels down to the laundromat when it's 90 degrees outside. You'll get to talk with makers and clientele from all around the world, and then you'll have to break down cardboard boxes and take out the trash. It takes a lot of work to keep our tiny shop beautiful, clean, inviting, engaging, and well-stocked. That said, we have a heck of a lot of fun doing it!

Specific responsibilities include:
-Opening/Closing the shop (all Shop Guides are keyholders)
-Receiving/shelving/merchandising salt, chocolate, bitters, and ice cream orders
-Assisting customers with purchases in all categories of the shop
-Visiting the flower market to purchase fresh flowers (we go twice a week)
-Preparing fresh bouquets to order and often for delivery through a courier
-Learning our history and as much as possible about each and every one of our producers and their products
-Sharing our vision with every customer and dialing in our interactions to make every corner of the shop accessible to everyone
-Preparing nightly deposits and reporting sales numbers
-Calling into daily 'huddles' where we teleconference with our Portland team members
-Dusting, sweeping, mopping, scrubbing as needed to keep our tiny shop sparkling
-Assisting with inventory and, potentially, placing orders with vendors
-Sampling out truffle-salted popcorn, chocolate bars, and artisan salts for customers, daily
-Creating engaging displays to show off our wares
-Coordinating product demos/tastings with local or visiting vendors
-Availability on and around Holidays is a Must

Ideal candidates will possess some or all of the following:
-Experience in sales/customer service and, preferably, foodservice
-Passion for cooking/baking/mixology
-Potential to grow with us (we want future Managers!)
-Excessive warmth and a passion for building community
-Some level of comfort with merchandising/marketing
-Ability to lift heavy boxes of Himalayan salt blocks from time to time Compensation this position is : hourly, $15/hr + Application instructions
