Founded in 1994, CUESA operates the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market and Mission Community Market in San Francisco and the Jack London Square Farmers Market in Oakland.

Job description

The Education Assistant is responsible for coordinating educational programs at CUESA’s farmers markets. This position also ensures that CUESA education facilities are managed and maintained in accordance with industry and health department standards. The Education Assistant helps to supervise education interns and volunteers.

 

Duties

1. Under the direction of CUESA’s Education team, the Education Assistant runs demos and education programs at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. CUESA’s education programs are free or low cost and include chef demos and other programs as determined. Duties include:

  • Run weekly educational programs in the CUESA classroom at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market, including program area setup (in coordination with operations staff), assisting and coordinating market shopping for cooking demos, coordination of prep work, managing volunteers, facilitating sampling, and ensuring proper cleanup and break down of the CUESA classroom.
  • Manage instructor/educator scheduling and calendar for CUESA classroom.
  • Acquire and edit program materials for programming (such as chefs’ recipes).
  • Oversee inventory & management of supplies and equipment (including sampling utensils, etc.) and facilitate ordering of new supplies as needed.
  • Work with department leads to ensure that key messages and the CUESA Mission are incorporated into all programs.
  • Provide access to and liaison between instructors, educators, culinary professionals, chefs, volunteers, interns and CUESA staff as requested.
  • Work with Book Passage to coordinate book signings for Saturday market as needed.
  • Coordinate and/or provide all required maintenance of the education facility and equipment in accordance with industry and health department standards and established CUESA protocols and schedules.

2. Work with volunteers and interns. Duties include:
  • Maintain and cultivate relationships with CUESA program volunteers.
  • Coordinate with interns to provide meaningful learning opportunities that meet CUESA’s needs.
  • Manage volunteers: provide clear information about expectations and program needs, provide opportunities for growth and enrichment, and express gratitude for their support.
3. The Education Assistant will work with CUESA Education team to support additional educational and general organizational activities, as needed.

 

Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience planning and managing culinary and/or food-based classes and demonstrations.
  • Commitment to educating consumers about sustainable seasonal foods.
  • Experience working with diverse constituents.
  • Willingness and ability to work Saturdays, weekdays, and some Sundays.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and electronic media.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • A friendly, outgoing nature and ease in interfacing with the public.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and the ability to work well with others.
Compensation

This is a part-time, non-exempt, hourly position based on 10 hours/week. The position is hourly $16 - $18 per hour, depending on experience. This position requires regular weekend and periodic evening work. Workers compensation and paid sick leave are provided. This position reports to the Education Director.
