Job description Primary Function: 

The University Farm Assistant Manager helps to implement a co-curricular farm program, with the Farm Manager, that enhances academic learning, conducts applied research, provides career experience and training, and directs outreach into the surrounding community.
This position impacts Sewanee students, employees, alumni, as well as the University community through the Office of Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability’s five focal paths: 
- Collaboration,
- Practical Training, 
- Outreach and Education, 
- Inspiration and Immersion,
- Evaluation and Reporting.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities:

1. The Assistant Farm Manager leads student work-study and Bonner leader crews to accomplish these tasks:
—Maintains pace and accuracy of planting/harvesting/packing crews;
—Delivers and invoices dining services or farm markets and arranges food bank drop offs;
—Monitors crop condition and implements irrigation, fertilizer and pest management .
—Mentors students in the choice and operation of power tools and hand tools to maintain infrastructure;
—Inspects animal facilities and arranges animal care and comfort;
—Assures dining hall food waste pickup and distribution.

2. Shares responsibility for the safety of student-workers, temporary workers, volunteers, and visitors who come into contact with the farm, the health and welfare of farm livestock, and the safety of the food products that leave the farm gate.

3. Operates farm equipment to manage cover crops, soil amendments, supply runs and general upkeep.

4. Creates and maintains logs required by organic certification, institutional animal care and use committee, product safety, and crop progress.

5. Assists with outreach event logistics, demonstrates sustainable agriculture and promotes connections between students, employees and the University Community, including organizations such as Farm Club and Friends of the Farm, Food Literacy Program and farm-relatedVISTA/Americorp projects.

6. Assists with administration of external funding sources.

7. Represents the university during public programs and conferences.

8. Periodic evening and weekend shifts required.

9. Perform other duties as assigned.


Machines & Equipment Used:
Tractor and 3-point hitch implements, Truck and trailer, tiller, mower, chain saw, string trimmer, garden hand tools and carpentry power tools.

Education: Associate degree in Crop Science, Entomology, Horticulture, Ecology, Biology or a related field, or 2 years of related coursework in postsecondary education, B.S. preferred.

Experience: 3 years of full time vegetable growing experience; a general knowledge of plant identification and nomenclature and knowledge of grounds and garden maintenance and animal husbandry.

Job Related Skills: Demonstrated oral and written communications skills to deal effectively with a diverse clientele. Familiar with smartphone technology and google docs, sheet and calendar and drive.
Preferred: Demonstrated interest in applied entomology and mycology, especially insect and disease scouting and identification, as well as the rearing of beneficial insects and edible mushrooms. Permaculture design certificate. Experience with basic budgeting, data tracking, and reporting, and experience in a startup environment. Operates a manual transmission tractor with implements and can back a trailer.
 

Licenses/Certification: Valid Driver’s license

Working Environment/Physical Requirements: This position spends at least 50% of the time outdoors in all kinds of weather.

Must be able to stand for extended periods of time, Must be able to walk for extended periods of time, Must be able to climb (many stairs, ladders), Must be able to crawl and or kneel, Must be able to push and/or pull objects, Must be able to navigate steep and rough terrain, Must be able to use feet for repetitive tasks, Must be able to use hands for repetitive tasks, Must be able to lift between 51-100 pounds (Heavy work), Must be able to carry between 51-100 pounds (Heavy work)
