Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Farm Manager will manage and maintain the Camp Burgess Farm as an educational center focusing on all things connected with food production and sustainable living; using the farm to its maximum potential for providing food to the camp dining halls, local food pantries and local farmer’s markets while promoting education through hands on experience and volunteerism.

CORE EXPECTATIONS:

1. PROGRAM MANAGEMENT & DEVELOPMENT

Directs and supervises farm program activities to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives including growing food, care of livestock and general land management. Establishes new program activities and expands program within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans. Implements sound environmental practices and resource use to maximize production and grant aid potential in order to develop the SSYMCA farm as a leader in food education.

2. STAFF AND VOLUNTEER ENGAGEMENT & DEVELOPMENT

Recruits, hires, trains, manages, develops, coaches, schedules, and directs staff and volunteers as needed.

3. PARTICIPANT ENGAGEMENT & DEVELOPMENT
Builds relationships with and among program participants, responds to inquiries and solves problems. Creates a safe and supportive community environment, assists in recruiting and engaging new participants, and connects participants to the YMCA’s cause.

4. BUDGET &FINANCIAL; MANAGEMENT

Plans and manages department budgets as approved in a fiscally responsible manner.

5. FACILITY MANAGEMENT

Works with appropriate branch staff to provide program facilities for participants that are clean, safe, adequately equipped, well maintained, and attractive. Maintains fields, fences, garden beds, animal pens, roadways and buildings and keeps them up to date and in an organized working fashion.

6. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT & SUPPORT

Assists in YMCA fund raising activities/events, and engages in collaborative relationships with community organizations in order to strengthen support and build community.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Sciences or Environmental Sciences or equivalent and 5 years experience.
  • Proven animal and agricultural skills
  • Experience working with volunteers in a farm setting.
  • Ability to develop lesson plans
  • Experience teaching a variety of farming, nature and outdoor education programs.
  • The ability to develop and maintain positive, effective, working relationships with staff and volunteers.
  • Must have a friendly, enthusiastic and positive approach to working with groups or independently.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Able to walk one mile in under 14 minutes without assistance.
  • Able to lift a 14” X 18” X 36” trunk weighing 40 pounds to a height of 48”.
  • Able to climb stairs, bend, stoop, kneel, twist, reach with hands, sit or stand for an extended period of time, lift and/or move up to 40 pounds, have finger dexterity, grasp, perform repetitive motions, talk, hear and have visual acuity.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, talk, hear and walk over grounds that are uneven, hilly, not paved and spread out over 300 acres.
