Communications and Admin Assistant The Dynamite Shop

  • Date Posted November 12, 2019
  • Location New York, NY
  • Category Culinary
  • Job type Part-Time
Company description The Dynamite Shop is a culinary social club for kids 8+ and their families in a Brooklyn storefront with a teaching kitchen, cook's library, photo and video studio, garden out back, and cafe up front.

Our goal is to help the rising generation of cooks find their niche in food, to celebrate the diversity of our communities and the wider world, and to develop positive relationships around food. Consider us Home Ec 2.0: we champion an old fashioned reverence of the table and offer a cool, supportive place to unplug.

The Dynamite Shop empowers kids to express themselves through the lens of food, so we’re not just cooking lasagna and bibimbap to bring home for dinner--we’re learning about regional variations, Skyping with chefs, watching and creating videos, and exploring how food intersects with culture and community.

Our core curricula during the academic year is the MAKE & TAKE afterschool program where kids cook dinner to bring home to their families and learn real life cooking skills in the process. The larger picture is that we are a community that revolves around food; we offer cooking classes for the whole family, a wildly popular summer camp, food service projects, readings, events, and more. Job description

We have an immediate opening for a Communications and Administrative Assistant to help with our growing cooking program for kids, overseeing detail-oriented and time-sensitive tasks related to our afterschool program, camps, classes and events.

Experience working in food and with recipes is a plus, but not essential: it’s much more important to have customer service experience with a youth-oriented business, excellent communication skills, a proven track record managing email lists and organizing information and crunching data.

The ideal candidate will be highly organized, a self-starter, a problem solver, digital savvy, and quick to pick up online processing and content management tools. (Experience with social media, marketing and having excellent writing/editing skills could lead to a larger position.)

The key responsibilities include managing student rosters (which involves various dynamic software and spreadsheet wizardry) and writing and answering parent emails, as well as conveying information to the staff and management in a timely manner.

Candidates should be enthusiastic about our mission and can communicate those messages, as well as our policies, clearly to clients.  While previous experience teaching children is not a requirement, our staff must have a real passion for engaging youth around food and good judgment around children and safety.

The Dynamite Shop vibe is open, inclusive, spunky, supportive, out-of-the-box and creative. While it's lots of fun, we keep a tight ship and expect all our employees to adhere strictly to our safety and behavioral protocols.

To start, position is 20 hours/week, with some afternoon hours every week to overlap with our afterschool programming. The position could grow to full time and includes immediate opportunities for more hours during weekend and evening events.

Compensation this position is : hourly, $15/hr + Location job can be done remotely Application instructions
