In 2017, we expanded our office coffee program from the DC Metro Area to New York City, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. In 2018, we started offering Kombucha on tap to meet consumers' growing demand for variety. Our coffee service is also available via Kegerator Vending Machines for customers who would like to transfer or share the cost of our craft beverages with their employees or tenants. 

With over 14 years of roasting experience, our mission is to breathe new life into an ancient craft and make amazing coffee approachable. That’s why we brought our coffee into offices, own and operate The Java Shack in Courthouse, opened Commonwealth Joe Coffee Roasters in Pentagon City, and launched a fleet of Nitro Cold Brew trikes across Arlington.

Job description

We’re looking for a Cafe Manager to truly own the leadership within our Commonwealth Joe Flagship Cafe located in Pentagon City. All cafe employees, including baritas and educators, report to the Cafe Manager. The Cafe Manager is responsible for all day-to-day cafe operations, meeting the cafe financial goals, and exemplifying the highest level of customer service.

Essential Functions

  • Leads and directs the cafe team to develop goals, align priorities, and execute initiatives in line with the Company’s larger goals
  • Is present in the cafe to ensure high customer service standards are met by: 
    • Assisting the team with problem solving efforts
    • Implementing SOPS and streamlining workflow to increase efficiencies
    • Increasing team effectiveness & morale
    • Conducts regular team meetings
    • Conducts individual check ins with staff members as needed
    • Demonstrates the highest level of customer service and professionalism
  • Manages the full lifecycle of cafe employees including: 
    • Hiring
    • Onboarding
    • Trainings
    • Shift scheduling
    • Conflict resolution
    • Performance Management
    • Offboarding
  • Responsible for ensuring the cafe is prepared for service
    • Managing vendor relationships
    • Inventory management 
    • Responding to maintenance concerns in a timely manner
  • Manages Cafe finances including: 
    • Manage monthly COGS targets
    • Manage labor spend to meet financial goals
    • Submitting employee hours to payroll
    • Allocating employee tips
    • Completing weekly & monthly financial reporting tasks
  • Knowledgeable and capable in any role within the cafe

About You

  • Passionate person who loves coffee
  • Has experience managing a coffee shop or restaurant
  • Are a self-starter who loves to work both independently and as a member of a large team
  • Has a “can do” mentality and is an excellent problem solver
  • Has people management experience
  • Demonstrates strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong motivational and inspiration skills
  • High attention to detail and high standards for quality and presentation
  • Empathetic people-person who has high customer service standards
  • Plans for the unexpected
  • Has open availability and willing to work beyond 9-5
