Weavers Way Co-op Job Description

 

Position: Produce Manager Reports to: Store Manager

Status: Full-time, salaried Level : VI


PURPOSE

To select, price and display fresh produce and to supervise staff to meet established objectives for sales, margin, and customer service.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES  


Purchasing
  • Purchase produce following guidelines of marketing plan, (e.g., priority for local, organic)
  • Negotiate with suppliers for favorable prices, terms, quality, and delivery
  • Evaluate suppliers and investigate new sources
  • Research new product, development, and selection
  • Evaluate turnover and adjust assortment accordingly
  • Receive produce deliveries and/or oversee receiving, following established receiving procedures
  • Review invoices for pricing and discount accuracy; request and track receipt of credits from suppliers
  • Ensure accurate, up-to-date PLU's
  • Enter new products and price changes promptly and accurately into scanning system
 

Merchandising

  • Order produce and maintain inventory control to minimize out-of-stocks and overstocks and maximize sales and turnover
  • Plan attractive produce displays, using color and texture to enhance
  • Ensure displays are replenished, rotated, culled several times daily
  • Set quality standards for culling; trim, wash, bundle produce as needed
  • Manage back stock and storage areas to ensure freshness and proper rotation
  • Price produce to achieve margin and sales goals, calculating prices by balancing margin, turnover, and value to shoppers
  • Select items for specials; mark down items as needed to reduce losses
  • Assist customers with produce questions and special orders
  • Provide product information (including source and use of the product) for customers and staff at the point of sale and/or in The Basket Bulletin or The Shuttle
  • Provide clear, attractive, consistent signage in coordination with the Marketing Coordinator
  • Set preparation and stock priorities for produce staff
  • Coordinate storage of items to be returned to suppliers
  • Ensure proper disposal of non-sellable product
  • Cooperate with other staff in the development of store-wide promotions
  • Participate in periodic inventory counts
  • Visit other stores for price comparisons, product and merchandising ideas; check periodic price surveys of competitors.


Plant and Equipment/Safety

  • Maintain produce display, prep and storage areas in clean, orderly condition, meeting Health Department standards
  • Ensure all work and retail areas meet established safety standards
  • Maintain department equipment in working order; correct or report problems to the Repair and Maintenance Coordinator
  • Research and recommend equipment repair or replacement
 

Customer Service

  • Treat people fairly, courteously, and with respect so that they are given a reason to return
  • Offer samples and suggestions for purchase and nutrition information to customers
  • Report customer suggestions, comments and complaints to appropriate management
  • Help customers find items in the store
  • Accurately and completely record special orders and ensure the forms are delivered for processing

Personnel
  • Hire qualified applicants, following established policy
  • Ensure on-the-job training for department staff
  • Develop performance standards and manage department staff accordingly
  • Conduct performance evaluations of department staff and participate in evaluations of other staff
  • Ensure that all department workers have up-to-date job descriptions and periodic reviews
  • Take and document disciplinary action as needed following established policy
  • Schedule hours for Produce Department within budget allocation
  • Hold Produce Department meetings at least quarterly 
  • Create and maintain a safe working environment for Produce staff in coordination with  the Safety Committee

Financial Performance
  • Develop and administer a departmental budget with assistance from the Finance Manager
  • Attain sales and margin goals for the department
  • Report in writing compliance or non-compliance (with explanation and suggested corrective action) within one week after receiving quarterly reports
  • Submit performance evaluations on Management Team members

Other Duties
  • Attend management or other meetings if scheduled and as directed
  • Ensure, in coordination with the Store Manager, that all areas meet lawful standards for food handling safety
  • Be actively involved in at least one Weavers Way board committee as a staff representative (e.g., Merchandising)
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the General Manager

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, use stairs, and be on feet for long periods
  • Computer literate
  • Be or become upon hiring a member in good standing of Weavers Way Co-op
