Camp Merrie-Woode is an all-girls residential summer camp located in the Appalachian mountains of Western North Carolina. Our extraordinary natural setting has inspired thousands of girls and young women since 1919. In this friendly, non-competitive community of simplified living, each individual is valued for who she is and who she will become. Due to our incredible location we feel that is our duty to teach Merrie-Woode girls the best practices possible when it comes to caring for the earth. Sustainability starts with self-investment and we would like to see this begin with the basics of farming and gardening.

The Farm & Garden Specialist is a seasonal, full-time staff member hired to teach and oversee our Farm & Garden class. The specifics of this class are included but not limited to: animal care, taking care of chickens, gardening with and without campers, and implementing sustainable practices such as composting and recycling in all areas of camp.

The Farm & Garden Specialist is responsible for developing and teaching activities such as gardening, animal care, rain water harvesting, farm to table cooking, and pollination activities to campers. The Specialist will monitor campers’ skill levels and implement methods of progression and rewarding achievements. This position manages supplies and equipment and works with staff to develop camp programs.

Essential duties as assigned but not limited to the following:

  • Attend and participate in the facilitation of pre-camp orientation, regular camp orientation, weekly staff meetings, and in-service trainings as scheduled.
  • Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers within scheduled activities.
  • Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, and involvement and empowerment of young girls.
  • Observe camper behavior, assess the appropriateness, and enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures.
  • Be aware of and implement safety guidelines and risk management.
  • Use effective and supportive communication strategies to assist in the supervision, training, and coaching of camp staff within scheduled activities and throughout the camp day in order to meet intended camper outcomes.
  • Observe staff, delivery of camp programs, and camper progression to identify strengths and areas in need of additional guidance and training.
  • Develop and deliver a farm and garden program that is appropriate for the age and ability of the campers and uses the camp’s natural environment.
  • Provide and create farm and garden resources for campers outside of direct program; including composting, food awareness, recycling, etc.
  • Ensure daily care of plants and animals involved in farm/garden programming.
  • Coordinate camper and staff involvement in planting, harvesting, plant and animal care.
  • Ensure camper and staff safety in all farm and garden programming.
  • Conducts opening and closing inventory of related supplies.
  • Completes end-of-year report with summary and recommendations for future program and camp activities.
  • Assists in the general operation of camp as assigned by the camp director or program director (i.e. closing and opening days of camp)

Job Requirements:

  • Must be 19 years or older.
  • Must hold at least a Wilderness First Aid medical certification or higher (or be willing to obtain one).
  • Must have previous experience in gardening, sustainability, and animal care.
  • Must possess a high degree of organizational skills and ability to adapt to frequently changing programmatic needs.
  • Must be comfortable with physical requirements of working at camp including endurance for prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching; requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.; willing to work irregular hours and with daily exposure to the sun, heat, and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, etc.
  • Must have experience teaching or facilitating children in some capacity.
