The Star of the Sea Foundation (SOS) is implementing new and progressive initiatives to improve access to nutritious food for low-income individuals and children throughout Monroe County, Florida, and we are looking for a passionate, mission-driven individual to join our team!
Responsibilities:
- Assist SOS's Registered Dietitian with the development and implementation of nutrition education programs at SOS's Community Kitchen;
- Work with community partners to develop volunteer-to-work, job training, and internship programs to be implemented at the Community Kitchen;
- Become knowledgeable about after school and summer meal program requirements, and develop capacity to increase program participation;
- Enhance our current Child Nutrition Program by developing new menus that are both creative and nutritious, as well as encourage the consumption of healthy foods;
- Incorporate the use of Tower Gardens and hydroponic systems into the Child Nutrition Program to increase knowledge of local food production;
- Recruit and train volunteers to ensure long-term program sustainability at the SOS Outreach Mission (food pantry) and the Community Kitchen;
- Assist with accurate data tracking and program evaluations at the Community Kitchen;
- Additional duties as needed and as desired by the VISTA member.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree required
- Relevant work, internship, and/or volunteer experience, with a particular emphasis on nutrition
- Proven interest in nutrition, community health, food access issues, sustainability, education, and/or social justice
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience in community organizing and outreach is a plus
- Ability and willingness to work with diverse groups of people
- Have a vested interest in and desired to improve the health of low-income peoples, especially children
