Company description The Star of the Sea Foundation is the largest hunger-relief agency in the Florida Keys, operating two client-choice food pantries as well as a Community Kitchen used to prepare meals for kids and seniors. SOS serves over 10,000 unduplicated individuals each year, distributing well over 2 million pounds of food to those in need. Job description

The Star of the Sea Foundation (SOS) is implementing new and progressive initiatives to improve access to nutritious food for low-income individuals and children throughout Monroe County, Florida, and we are looking for a passionate, mission-driven individual to join our team!

Responsibilities:

  • Assist SOS's Registered Dietitian with the development and implementation of nutrition education programs at SOS's Community Kitchen;
  • Work with community partners to develop volunteer-to-work, job training, and internship programs to be implemented at the Community Kitchen;
  • Become knowledgeable about after school and summer meal program requirements, and develop capacity to increase program participation;
  • Enhance our current Child Nutrition Program by developing new menus that are both creative and nutritious, as well as encourage the consumption of healthy foods;
  • Incorporate the use of Tower Gardens and hydroponic systems into the Child Nutrition Program to increase knowledge of local food production;
  • Recruit and train volunteers to ensure long-term program sustainability at the SOS Outreach Mission (food pantry) and the Community Kitchen;
  • Assist with accurate data tracking and program evaluations at the Community Kitchen;
  • Additional duties as needed and as desired by the VISTA member.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • Relevant work, internship, and/or volunteer experience, with a particular emphasis on nutrition
  • Proven interest in nutrition, community health, food access issues, sustainability, education, and/or social justice
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in community organizing and outreach is a plus
  • Ability and willingness to work with diverse groups of people
  • Have a vested interest in and desired to improve the health of low-income peoples, especially children
