Wozupi is an organic farm committed to growing food in a way that nourishes the earth, the community, and people’s minds and bodies. The farm grows vegetables, herbs, and fruit, produces maple syrup, and uses honeybees to pollinate the plants. All Wozupi produce is USDA-certified organic.

Wozupi is owned and operated by the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, a federally recognized, sovereign Native American tribe located southwest of Minneapolis/St. Paul. Since opening in 2010, Wozupi, which means “garden” in the Dakota Language, has encompassed the tribe’s focus on being a good neighbor, good employer, and good steward of the earth.

Join the leadership team at Wozupi Tribal Gardens, a farm owned and operated by the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community. Wozupi serves the community’s wellness and cultural interests by growing Organic produce and providing traditional foods and food education.
 

The Agricultural Lead is a dynamic position expected to adapt to the farm’s evolving mission. Experience should include a strong background in Organic or ecological vegetable production, ideally at an intensive market garden scale of 1-5 acres. Machinery experience, planning proficiency, crew leadership, general handiness, mature interpersonal skills, a strong work ethic, and an aptitude for learning and navigating systems and people in a governmental setting are all desirable traits.
 

The Agricultural Lead can expect this position to be mostly field-based during the growing season with some administrative work, and to be largely administrative through parts of the winter. Our growing season is long due to our high tunnels, and the Lead should be committed to growing the highest-quality produce possible for as much of the year as is practical. The position may involve primary responsibility for a small flock of laying hens. The Lead will cross-train with the other Lead and the Agricultural Supervisor in Sugar Bush, Orchard, Native Foods, & Education.
 

 

Job Summary:

Directs and oversees specific aspects of the Community's agricultural services. Services may include: vegetable production, herb production, native edible and medicinal plant production, orchard activity, maple syrup production, livestock management, and agriculture/native plant-based education. Where applicable, may involve use of controlled environments like greenhouses, high tunnels, packing shed, sugar shack/honey house, and livestock housing. Apply knowledge of living systems to produce wholesome food for the Community's needs. Manage daily operations for assigned activities, assist other activities when needed. Supervise and implant necessary recordkeeping to ensure sustainable systems, track production, customer engagement, pesticide use, and maintain organic certification, where applicable. Obtain and/or oversee a Community food safety operation license pertaining to areas of assigned responsibilities.
 


Requirements:

  1. Combination of post-secondary education and/or experience to equal five years in agriculture in one or more of the following areas: native edible and medicinal plants, vegetables, herbs, orchard, sugarbushing, livestock management; including organic farming experience.
  2. Knowledge of organic certification levels, if appropriate to area of responsibility.
  3. Experience in record keeping.
  4. Experience with chemical preparation.
  5. Must be able to acquire a Minnesota non-commercial pesticide applicator license related to assigned areas of responsibility within 6 months of employment.
  6. Must be detail oriented and disciplined to perform routine tasks under adverse conditions.
  7. Ability to operate farm machinery and equipment and perform low-level routine maintenance.
  8. Valid driver's license required with a good driving record.
  9. On feet or standing 70% of time.
  10. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  11. Outside work 70% of time.
