Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

Community Health Improvement Partners is seeking a Director of Food Systems to oversee all aspects of the leadership and development of the Farm to Institution Center. The Director is responsible for: project management, planning and implementation, public and community relations, partner and contractor relations, project staff, fundraising, evaluation activities, contract management, resource development/allocation and budgeting.

 

The Farm to Institution Center has a two-fold mission: 1) To improve community health by improving access and consumption of healthy foods, and 2) To support farmers in creation of a vibrant, diverse, and growing local agricultural scene. The Center works to create a healthy and sustainable local food system in San Diego County, focusing primarily on the connection between local farm and institution as a pathway of good food into the community. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Fundraising (25%)
  • Develop funding pipeline to sustain program and grant development
  • Develop vision for department and raise funds to execute accordingly
  • Determine grant proposal strategies, lead grant writing, and manage review process for submission of multiple grants annually

 

  • Resource Development/Allocation (25%)
  • Manage project coordinators, managers, and assistants
  • Manage utilization of subcontracts
  • Lead and facilitate evaluation activities for all large-scale programs
  • Develop and monitor program budgets, particularly in relation to labor allocations

 

  • Partnerships/Community Relations (40%)
  • Manage project implementation process developing execution strategies for cross-organizational efforts toward common goals
  • Communicate with project partners to leverage best practices
  • Create, support and mobilize partnerships to promote successful project outcomes based primarily on grant deliverables
  • Lead strategies for key institutional food service collaborative working groups
  • Serve as primary spokesperson regarding all items relating to related program
  • Create and implement program public and community relations agendas so that they are in alignment with department agendas
  • Participate in events in the community to spread awareness of CHIP and its’ programs
  • Conduct presentations to community to promote the mission and vision of CHIP

 

  • Administration (10%)
  • Ensure all requirements of agreed upon contract are met
  • Inform CHIP team members of project accomplishments and set-backs
  • Prepare and submit reports to funders in adherence with reporting requirements
  • Ensure compliance with project budget by monitoring expenses and income

QUALIFICATIONS

Incumbents must demonstrate the ability to follow policies and procedures as established in the Community Health Improvement Partners Handbook. Incumbents will also contribute to a positive work environment by behaving and communicating in a manner such that they get along with all constituent groups, co-workers, and management.

 

In addition, the education, experience, and other skills listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

 

EDUCATION

  • Bachelors’ degree in Public Health, Community Health or Communications or other related field is required or 10-15 years’ experience in similarly situated field
  • Master’s degree is preferred

 

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • 5-7 years of program management experience
  • Experience with federal grant contract management including budgeting and reporting is required


KEY SKILLS SET

  • Ability to speak and write in Spanish fluently is preferred
  • Strong, programmatic management and supervisory skills; able to ensure the effective execution of large-scale, programmatic goals and objectives through appropriate staff and resource levels and development 
  • Able to lead department in autonomy
  • Able to work with a variety of system leaders to build consensus around strategy and tactics to achieve mutually beneficial goals
  • Able to build a team and support employee development
  • Knowledge of HR and organization Policies and Procedures

EQUIPMENT AND APPLICATIONS

  • Proficiency in MS Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Working knowledge of all standard office equipment

 

SALARY RANGE

$62,000-$72,000 Full Time. Full benefits package
