Farm Intern Skinny Kitty Farms

  • Date Posted December 06, 2019
  • Location Mount Vernon, WA
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job type Summer Job
Company description We are a 12 acre diversified farm located in the beautiful Skagit Valley WA.  Our focus is on bringing clean, healthy food to markets, while honoring the ecology of the land and building resiliency into our food system.  We follow a regenerative style of farming and are always adapting and changing to meet these goals.  Internship description

Farm hands work side by side with us, and see all aspects of farm ownership.  Primary duties will include; transplanting, weeding, and harvesting of field crops.  Feeding, watering, and moving of broiler chickens, and a small goat herd. You will also have the opportunity to work in our poultry processing facility, and perform tasks in the orchard such as thinning, pruning, and harvesting, depending on when you are on the farm.

You will be joining us for at least one market a week in Seattle, and we offer our farm hands the opportunity to attend a small local market, where you buy produce from us at wholesale and keep your profits.  It has the potential to put an extra $100 in your pocket each week, and gives you the opportunity to run your own market booth- a great resume builder!

Along with the work, we open our books and our brains to you.  We have been focused on soil health and have some odd practices we are developing to aid in building healthy soils.  We practice minimal tillage, with the goal to be no-till someday, and we integrate livestock and riparian zones where we can.  We are inspired by the regenerative agricultural movement and are doing what we can to aid in the mitigation of climate change due to agricultural practices.

For interns that are not from WA state, we like to take field trips in the fall to see the beauty this state has to offer.
We do have a little farm worker who will be 2 this coming season.  While we are not hiring a babysitter, he does tend be in the fields playing while we work.  So you need to be comfortable around kids.

An ideal candidate will;

  • be willing to work outside in rain or sun
  • be willing to work early morning to mid afternoon (with some long full days)
  • Able to work along side a leader, as well as on their own
  • comfortable working with machines such as tractors, weedwhackers, etc. (experience a plus, but willing to learn a must)

It's a physical job, you need to be in shape by the time you get to work- lifting 50 lbs, carrying 20lbs long distances, walking a few miles a day, bending over for an hour at time, working on your knees in soil for hours, etc.  It's not super hard work, but it is physical.

Compensation this position is : stipend / non-monetary compensation
Details: We offer $200-$300 per week, plus free housing and food though the season. Housing before and after the season is negotiable. Final rate will be established prior to starting here, and depends on experience. Application instructions
