Harvest Pierce County is the Urban Agriculture wing of Pierce Conservation District. This is accomplished through reconnecting communities to each other and their food systems through gardening, gleaning, and educating Pierce County about their food and food systems.

Internship description

This position will support our Farm Foundations training, which educates new and beginning farmers on organic production techniques, with an opportunity to practice and develop skills on our community farm. The Farm Foundations service member would support the efforts to recruit and train the next generation of farmers, as well as gain skills with outreach, engagement and education on topics of sustainable agriculture.  The AmeriCorps position will run from Feb. 16 – August 31st.  There will be the option to continue part-time as an hourly, contract employee through the end of October.

  • QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

    Required:

    • Interest/experience in farming and farm education
    • Ability to work outside in all weather and lead work parties of volunteers
    • Comfort and experience with diverse groups of people
    • Self-starter, ability to work well independently
    • Comfortable talking with strangers and groups
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Ability to multitask and manage multiple priorities
    • Knowledge of and passion for environmental issues

    Preferred:

    • 1-2 years of experience in farm work, volunteer management, community education, or similar programming
    • Knowledge of Pierce County area and community
    • Experience with gardening and/or agriculture
    • Experience with community organizing
Compensation this position is : stipend / non-monetary compensation
