2020 Organic Farm Apprentice Serenbe Farms

  • Date Posted January 02, 2020
  • Location Chattahoochee Hills, GA
  • Category Agriculture
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description

Serenbe is a wellness community connected to nature on the edge of Atlanta. A neighborhood full of fresh food, fresh air and focused on wellbeing. Our USDA certified organic farm is a central part of the community. We are a no-till vegetable farm and grow our produce year round.  Our organic produce is marketed to a 75 family CSA, Serenbe’s Farmers Market, and several restaurants.  We are also an educational farm; offering a year long apprentice program and conducting educational farm tours.

We are looking for apprentices to join us for the 2020 growing season.

Internship description

Organic Diversified Vegetables/Agritourism Farm Apprentice

We are seeking 3 motivated, task-oriented, and fun individuals to apprentice at Serenbe Farms for the 2020 growing season (March-Nov). Candidates must have a positive, can-do attitude and must be able to demonstrate a passionate interest in agriculture and sustainable living.

Our apprentice positions are physically and mentally demanding, but also provide opportunities for farm management training. Strong apprentices will have the opportunity to continue through the winter and on for a second season.

The work week during market season consists of approximately 50 hours, with 9-hour weekdays, rotating weekends. Work outside of normal work hours will be required for some projects and events.

Our farm is located in the community of Serenbe, an Agrihood 30 mins South of Atlanta.  We are a village with all the amenities of a small town, like a lovely coffee shop and bakery, gift shops, restaurants, walking/biking trails, and more.

Apprentices are provided with housing and receive a $1000/month stipend.

The apprenticeship is best viewed as a hands-on, work-training program, rather than an exclusively “educational” experience. Apprentices are trained on daily farm chores, planting, weeding, harvesting and marketing vegetables through a CSA, restaurant sales, and a farmers market. Apprentices will find that they gain the most experience by showing initiative, attention to detail, good work ethic and the ability to ask for help. Strong communication skills are vital to thriving within a small hard working group.

In addition to working on the farm, we offer opportunities for educational advancement including a reading list and farm field trips to study other local farm models in the area.

Apprentices will be exposed to a diverse array of farm tasks including:

Crop Production: Cultivation of crops, crop health and fertility, record keeping. harvest, wash and pack activities.

Education: We host farm tours almost weekly.  Applicant must be comfortable working with and speaking in front of up to 50 people, of any age and demographic.

Market Sales: We are a for-profit farm and as such, need sales minded individuals to market and push our inventory to restaurants, our CSA members, and through our Saturday Farmers Markets.

Housing

Housing is provided for this position. Three interns will share a three bedroom/ one bathroom home, located walking distance to the farm. Cottage is in forest like setting surrounded by trees, with small yard for grilling and relaxing in a hammock, as well as a small deck.

Schedule

We work hard to maintain an 8am-5 pm (or a seasonal version such as 7-4) with a one hour lunch break at noon on our farm, for life quality and structure.

There are occasional hours outside of this as needed.

Schedule is M-F + rotating Saturdays and light Sunday chores.

  • Being part of a dedicated community of people working to improve our local food system
