The San Diego Food System Alliance (Alliance) is a diverse and inclusive network of over 120 individuals, nonprofit organizations, public agencies, private businesses, institutions, and foundations committed to building a healthy, sustainable, and just food system for all. As a backbone organization inspired by collective impact, we elevate collaboration, influence policy, and catalyze transformation in the food system. The Alliance also holds several community events a year for the public to foster a movement in our region to improve our food environment. The Alliance was officially launched in September 2012 out of a recommendation from the San Diego Food System Assessment and the Urban-Rural Roundtable, convened by Roots of Change, San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts and Mayor Jerry Sanders.

Position Summary

The Program Coordinator is responsible for coordinating special projects within the Wasted Food Prevention Program, which provides technical assistance, consumer education, and network development services to support government agencies, institutions, businesses, nonprofits, and residents throughout San Diego County in their efforts to reduce wasted food. Responsibilities include managing stakeholder relationships, adhering to work plans and timelines, conducting research, analyzing data, and generating reports. The Program Coordinator will provide technical assistance for cities and the County, and support coordination and content development for the Save The Food San Diego consumer education campaign.

 

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Program Manager:

  • Provide coordination and support for strategic food waste reduction and recovery initiatives, including but not limited to:
    • Technical Assistance for Cities – Cities are facing increased waste reduction regulations that require supportive services for implementing wasted food solutions. The Alliance is working with regulators at CalRecycle, as well as local city officials, to ensure that state requirements for food waste prevention and donation are met in the San Diego County region. 
      • Provide food waste prevention and food donation technical assistance to cities. Coordinate the management of multiple city contracts and implement activities, including developing educational materials, collaborating with local food recovery agencies and businesses to implement wasted food solutions, and building the capacity of city officials to expand edible food recovery programs. 
    • Save The Food, San Diego! Consumer Education Campaign – Through its countywide food waste awareness campaign, “Save the Food, San Diego!, the Alliance provides education to residents about the impact of wasted food at the household level. The goal of our educational efforts is to inspire consumers to realize that everyone has a part to play in reducing wasted food. Small changes in our individual attitudes, behaviors, consumption, and grocery shopping habits can go a long way.
      • Execute educational outreach initiatives under the Save The Food, San Diego! umbrella, including a grocery store campaign burst, media partnership with cities and haulers, and support for the EcoChallenge initiative at corporate campuses. Develop new educational content, working collaboratively with community groups to ensure cultural appropriateness.
  • Ensure successful project coordination, including meeting planning and scheduling for multiple projects, synthesizing of notes for sharing with stakeholders, following up with communications, and organizing key project documents
  • Provide on-the-ground food waste reduction and donation technical assistance and best practice support in a variety of settings, including hotels, hospitals, restaurants, schools, and other food production facilities
  • Manage project work plans and timelines, impact measurement, and reporting 
  • Foster strong partnerships with core stakeholders including local government, food producing businesses and institutions, nonprofits, food recovery and meal service groups, etc. 
  • Communicate outcome measures with stakeholders and monitor progress for reporting 
  • Develop strategic communication materials, conducting outreach and developing presentations
  • Support research and compilation of food waste reduction and recovery best practices, technologies, models, policies, and legislation
  • Support the design and execution of other organizational initiatives as needed
 

Required Qualifications & Experiences 

  • Bachelor degree and/or 2 years equivalent experience in food systems, project management, resource management, business administration, public policy, food service, environmental science or related field
  • Possess an interest in equitable food access, food security and sustainable food system issues
  • Excellent organizational skills, ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects/tasks with attention to detail
  • Excellent oral and written comprehension and communication skills
  • Experience in facilitating effective meetings that meet intended goals and outcomes
  • Strong interpersonal skills; experience working with diverse populations and multi-stakeholder communications
  • Ability to take initiative and operate with autonomy; flexible and adaptable
  • Positive, enthusiastic presence with good public relations skills and respectful, professional demeanor 
  • Experience working collaboratively as part of a team
 

Preferred Qualifications & Experiences

  • Knowledge of local organizations and regional San Diego food system landscape
  • Experience managing, designing, or implementing a public education, social media or marketing campaign
  • Project coordination and/or management experience
  • Food service operations and/or management experience 
  • Food waste prevention or food recovery experience and knowledge
  • Experience with ArcGIS and data analysis 
  • Knowledge of state legislation AB 1826 and SB 1383 
  • Spanish language skills
