About Dutchess Outreach & The Mobile Market: Dutchess Outreach acts as a catalyst for community revitalization and exists in Dutchess County as an advocate and provider of hunger and relief services in order to ensure that everyone, regardless of income, has access to fresh, healthy food. Our programs consist of emergency relief services including The Lunchbox, which serves over 200 meals a day, The Beverly Closs Memorial Food Pantry and the Poughkeepsie Plenty Fresh Market. The PPF Market is a mobile farmers market that is located three days a week in front of the Family Partnership Center in Poughkeepsie. The PPF Market offers people low-cost, locally grown produce. The market came into existence in response to the growing presence of food insecurity in the region and acts as bridge to connect local residents with fresh food
Job description
Position Brief: Dutchess Outreach seeks an organized and dependable individual with experience selling at farmers markets or other produce retail, and interest in addressing food insecurity within Poughkeepsie and throughout Dutchess County. The farm assistant’s primary focus is to work the PPF Mobile Market and table at the Poughkeepsie waterfront market, as well as help with the day to day farm operations.
Responsibilities: With the support of Dutchess Outreach administrative staff, collaborative farm partners, volunteers from the Poughkeepsie Plenty Food Committee and the Mobile Market Manager, the Farm Assistant is responsible for working the PPF Mobile Market as well as to help grow produce to supply the Mobile Market.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
- Primary person working the PPF Mobile Farmers Market
- Setup and takedown of the market at each site
- Track data on market sales at each site using an iPad
- Take cash, credit, debit, FMNP and other forms of payment and give change
- Help distribute produce to Food Panty and Lunchbox
- Collaboration with the Mobile Market Manager to plan and implement market publicity,
- Promotion and special events
- Help with direct seeding, flat seeding and transplanting
- Help with tool and hand weeding
- Harvest and process vegetable and fruit crops
- Supervision and support for volunteer groups that come to help on the farm and at market
- Maintaining and expanding relationships with other local farms that contribute produce and resources to the market and farm
- Some evening or special event hours may be required
Qualifications:
- Experience with working farmers markets and/or selling produce
- Driver’s license
- Able to identify and name produce as well as how to cook or prepare it
- Ability to use and iPad for market sales and sale log
- Ability to do simple mental math
- Ability to take various forms of payment and give change
- Ability to lift/carry 50 pounds
- Ability to work independently
- Strong communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to think creatively and solve problems
- Organized and attentive to detail
- Ability to meet deadlines
- Passionate about the community and addressing food insecurity
- Experience with farming or large-scale gardening (preferred)
- Ability to speak Spanish (preferred)
- Ability to drive a long bed F-350 pickup truck on City streets with 22 ft. long trailer in tow (preferred)
