Neighborhood Farm Manager Boundless Landscapes

  • Date Posted March 03, 2020
  • Location Boulder, CO
  • Category Agriculture / Education
  • Job type Full-Time
Company description Boundless Landscapes aims to turn the world into a garden by converting lawns and underutilized commercial/community spaces into thriving food gardens. Rather than getting bogged down in dire predictions and doomsday thinking, we choose to be energized and make change. At Boundless Landscapes, we imagine a more resilient world where much of our food comes from our own backyards and those of our neighbors, where the impacts of climate change have been reduced, the damage of the commodity food system has been healed, pesticide use in our neighborhoods has halted, young people are engaged as agents of change, our communities are more resilient, and local, nutritious, organically-grown food is accessible to all. We believe the seeds of that world lie today in the dormant potential of our very own backyards and businesses, and in the youth within our communities. Job description

POSITION DESCRIPTION

We’re currently recruiting an experienced farmer to manage micro-farm operations in one or more neighborhoods in Boulder. The farm manager will work with other members of the Boundless team to tend to, plant, harvest from, and maintain micro-farms in a designated geographic area in Boulder. We seek a friendly, detail-oriented, highly-skilled individual who has experience in leading teams, managing farm operations, and performing tasks ranging from planting to harvesting.

The farm manager will manage a team of up to five teen apprentice farmers at a time as they bike between neighborhood micro-farms—this includes teaching them farming techniques, harvesting with them, and empowering them to host our weekly farmstand. Because the farm manager will perform these tasks in addition to training and educating teens and young adults, we are looking for an individual with deep knowledge, passion, and experience in the field. The farm manager will also manage adult farm laborers, college-age interns, and graduate-student fellows who will assist with farm activities. This is a fast-paced, full-time position during the growing season (April 7 through October 31).

FARM MANAGER DUTIES

Boundless Landscapes seeks an individual who is eager to play an important role in helping us realize our mission and vision. This is a community-facing farming opportunity with potential for growth and future employment. Under the leadership of the director of farm operations and the CEO, this position will perform various duties (with assistance) in micro-farms throughout Boulder. Specifically, the farm manager will:

  • cultivate highly productive, beautiful gardens in backyards, front yards, and community spaces using organic (non-certified) and regenerative growing practices;

  • oversee vegetable and flower production, including but not limited to planting, weeding, laying irrigation, implementing the annual crop calendar, harvesting, washing, seed saving, preparing crops for sale, and packaging;

  • harvest and wash food to FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act) standards;

  • assist with food distribution programs, including CEA (homeowner shares), farmstand, wholesale, and donation programs;

  • ensure the health and flourishing of micro-farms through holistic pest management and crop rotation;

  • manage and educate interns, fellows, apprentices, and employees, creating a positive and welcoming environment for all;

  • help maintain farm equipment and repair/replace farm tools and equipment as needed;

  • delight homeowner partners, community members, wholesale partners, and all customers with outstanding customer service, efficiency,  friendliness, and great communication;

  • ensure the safety of all employees; and

  • communicate harvest totals, farming updates, pest problems, and product availability to the director of farm operations clearly and consistently.

TIME COMMITMENT & COMPENSATION

This is a full-time, temporary position (approximately 40 hours/week. Target start date is April 7 and approximate end date is October 31, 2020). The farm manager will work in several locations in one or more neighborhoods in Boulder, Colorado. Compensation is $17/hour. Work will primarily be performed from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday beginning June 1, with the possibility of some different hours (including weekends and evenings) for special events and/or farmstands. Prior to June 1, the farm manager’s schedule will be crafted (in collaboration with the director of farm operations) to fulfill farm needs prior to the start of the season. Requests for time off must be submitted for approval; approval of requests is dependent upon staff schedule coordination and the needs of the organization.
