Norwell Farms is looking to immediately hire a part-time year-round education director. We seek an enthusiastic leader to teach kids, teens, and adults about sustainable farming and home-garden practices and the benefits of connecting with local healthy food. The educator works independently and under the guidance of the nonprofit Board of Directors to run the summer Little Homesteaders farm-based education sessions, held at Hornstra Farms in Norwell, which involves engaging with children on a variety of topics and animals including farm chores, dairy cows and chickens, gardening, environment, and food.
This individual will develop partnerships and year-round education opportunities with local schools and clubs. The position’s responsibilities also include developing seminar series on a variety of topics and hands-on workshops for teens and adults, recruiting and coordinating volunteers, and running of programs. They will interact with the local farming community including our Field Manager.
The position is expected to be year-round, with part-time hours (variable throughout the season – up to 20 hours/week in most summer weeks).
Must be available to begin no later than May 1, 2020.
Responsibilities:
- Working with the guidance of the non-profit Board of Directors to develop and run farm-based education offerings around Norwell and local South Shore area.
- Run summer morning week-long education sessions for children ages 4-12 and teen volunteers 13-18 in a variety of hands-on farm-based education activities including farm chores, planting, gardening, exploring, chickens, observing dairy cows, regenerative farming practices, etc. (location: Hornstra Farms)
- Develop adult and family seminar series and workshops on a variety of topics related to local agriculture and home gardening practices.
- Work with Norwell Farms’ field manager to coordinate volunteer and interns (location: Hornstra Farms)
- Develop new education opportunities and partnerships at Norwell schools and local clubs/organizations to promote our mission.
- Develop educational and visual content for a range of platforms including social media and newsletters.
Qualifications:
- Enthusiastic and able to work independently and with others in a working farm atmosphere.
- Experience working with groups of children ages 4+.
- Must be physically able to engage in labor and activities necessary to run farm chores.
- Familiarity with farming, gardening, and/or with barnyard animals. Comfortable working with chickens, cows.
- A positive approach to teaching and working with others across a range of working conditions.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Responsible and reliable.
- Pass CORI/SORI checks.
