Assistant Farmer Homesteads for Hope

  • Date Posted March 13, 2020
  • Location Rochester, NY
  • Category Agriculture / Nonprofit
  • Job type Part-Time
Company description

Homesteads for Hope is a 501(c)3 nonprofit community farm founded in 2013 by a mother and daughter raising a transitioning son with autism.  In September of 2016 a team of parents, professionals, and collaborators came together to purchase a 55-acre farm on the banks of the Erie Canal in Rochester.  Homesteads for Hope is developing an agricultural community that offers effortless inclusion to all individuals without discrimination by providing a place to learn, work, live, and grow.  The vision is to make a profound impact in the lives of individuals and their families through community integration, collaboration, and empowerment.

The Homesteads for Hope concept is part of a national movement of unique intentional agricultural communities that utilize the structure of a farm setting and the lessons provided by nature’s classroom to accelerate the growth of a person’s unique abilities.  These communities serve and support young adults exiting the school system who would otherwise be given few opportunities to master skills and integrate themselves into the workforce.  The mission at Homesteads for Hope directly meets the Federal and New York State guidelines for serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, which are: self-advocacy, societal inclusion, and transitioning work skills training.  As the demand for self-directed and inclusive community services continues to rise, particularly for young adults with disabilities, Homesteads for Hope will continue to evolve with that demand to provide quality services to people of all abilities.
