Camp Cook Laketrails Base Camp

  • Date Posted March 31, 2020
  • Location Oak Island, MN
  • Category Culinary / Nonprofit
  • Job type Summer Job
Company description Laketrails Base Camp has been guiding teens on wilderness canoeing adventures throughout Lake of the Woods since 1952.  While our Base Camp is located in the unique Northwest Angle region--the far northern area of MN--each of our canoe trips explores the waterways, islands, and inland lakes of Ontario.  Getting to camp is part of the fun as one must travel through Canada to reach us!  (Don't forget your passport!)  Then, it's just a 6-mile boat ride out to the island.

Laketrails is all about building youth.  Campers learn to truly appreciate themselves, their contributions to their communities, and the importance of Nature.  Our goals each session are that campers will leave the island with confidence, knowing that they can be a positive member of a community, possessing knowledge and a desire to care for the earth, and hopefully, that they'll make some friends along the way.  With a "no tech" mentality during each 9-day session, campers and staff have many opportunities to connect face-to-face, something that's key to positive individual growth and development.

Recognizing the value of small groups, camper numbers can range anywhere from 30-80 per session, with most sessions numbering about 50.  Our staff is relatively small with 12 Guides for the canoe trips along with just 4-5 Base Camp staff.  Accommodations are rustic with cabins, bunks, and outhouses, and one feels close to Nature all around.

The Laketrails way of life is centered around an attitude of unconditional acceptance and caring for one another.  We also  maintain a commitment to caring for the environment, whether in Base Camp or "on trail" and seek to teach campers that all are related.  Our philosophy for the earth is that it's better to live with Nature than trying to subdue it. Job description The Laketrails Base Camp Cook must love teens, good food, and enjoy living close to nature.  The job entails not only the actual preparation of meals, but mentoring a handful of teen workers, ordering groceries each week, and maintaining a healthy, clean, and safe kitchen.

Our Camp Cook lives on site in a rustic log cabin tucked into the woods on the "quiet side" of our small island on Lake of the Woods.  A two-minute walk brings you to our Lodge which houses the Laketrails kitchen and dining area along with a generous food pantry and KP area.  Our kitchen features modern and well-kept stainless steel countertops, appliances, and commercial fridge and freezer.  Windows surround the kitchen work area and look out over the front lawn and across the water to neighboring islands.

As a co-ed wilderness camp for teens, Laketrails runs six 9-day sessions during which campers spend part of their time in Base Camp and part of the time "on trail" experiencing a wilderness canoe trip.  Since the Cook prepares meals for Base Camp only, this means they get a chance to relax while campers and most of the staff are away from the island.

Preferred qualifications for the Laketrails Camp Cook include the following:
  • Training and experience cooking for groups of up to 100
  • Experience working with teenagers
  • A desire to work and live in a camp community
Required qualifications and personal characteristics include the following:
  • Certification as a Food Safety Manager through a ServSafe course or other course approved by the MN Dept. of Health

  • Ability to be flexible in the event of delays for weather and unexpected circumstances
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement and work with minimal supervision
  • Commitment to the mission and philosophy of Laketrails
Key responsibilities for the Laketrails Cook include the following:
  • Training/mentoring teen kitchen workers, usually 2-3 at a time
  • Acting as general all-around cook for all meals
  • Participating in the two weeks of Staff Training (June 7-20, 2020)
  • Preparing menus, estimating food needs, and ordering, receiving*, and storing foodstuffs according to MDH guidelines
  • Maintaining a clean kitchen and pantry at all times
  • Maintaining appropriate inventory of foods and supplies
  • Closing the kitchen down for the off-season
*Must be able to lift food packages of 20-50 lbs. OR direct others to help with this task.

The Laketrails Camp Cook works hard for Days 1, 2, and 3 of each session and then can mostly relax during Days 4, 5, and 6.  Days 7 and 8 are again busy, Day 9 is a fairly light day; then the cycle repeats.  There are additional days off between every two sessions when cooking responsibilities are shared by fellow staff members.  The Cook's job takes place in a very fun and energetic environment fueled by the enthusiasm of teens and our mostly college-aged staff.  But, along with all the excitement, there's plenty of time to quietly enjoy the amazing sunsets of Oak Island and the beauty of Mother Nature that surrounds us.
