Tomales Bay Oyster Company, California's oldest continuously operating shellfish farm.
Tomales Bay Oyster Co., TBOC, sustainably plants, grows, and harvest over a million Pacific oysters annually.
Why Sustainable Seafood Matters
70 percent of the Earth's surface is water, yet only about 7 percent of protein consumed by humans comes from the sea. Shellfish are a more sustainable protein source when compared to land based farm sources. Shellfish has less impact on the environment, is less dependent on water usage and more efficiently produces protein.
Pacific Oysters are a truly sustainable crop; they require no fertilizer, no feed, just a saltwater estuary and natural phytoplankton brought in by the tide to produce a delicious succulent oyster.
Our farm employs best management practices using durable re-usable materials for farm infrastructure, and recycling whenever possible materials that are no longer usable. We work as good stewards of the Bay we farm, to remove visitor waste, regularly conduct growing area inspections to look for and retrieve lost gear. We constantly are looking to develop new farming methods that minimize the impact on the bay's environment.
Tomales Bay Oyster Company along with other oyster farms in Tomales Bay participate in quarterly bay wide clean up days as well as continuous farm area patrol that removes tons of trash, household waste and dumped debris from the growing areas and shoreline of Tomales Bay.
