About the Role

As a part of the Food Safety Team, the Food Safety Associate will help oversee the day-to-day production of approximately 20,000 meals across multiple kitchens.  Areas of execution include monitoring cooking, cooling, and reheating processes, evaluating kitchen cleanliness, maintaining compliance with DOH regulations, ensuring accurate written procedures and food safety information are available to all employees, and training kitchen employees on those processes. 

 

Strong candidates will have a background in food safety, which includes training and holding staff accountable to food safety measures.  They will be quick on their feet to problem-solve and conduct risk assessment in a fast-paced environment.  They will have strong communication skills and be comfortable providing in-the-moment direction to staff.

 

Critical Functions
DOH Compliance:  Develop, implement, and audit food safety and food quality systems that ensure Red Rabbit is compliant at all times with DOH regulations.  On a daily basis, verify that all policies and procedures, including monitoring food temperatures, are being followed.  Assist in troubleshooting and finding feasible short- and long-term solutions to food safety issues as they arise.

Internal Training and Support:  Provide training to all employees on all aspects of food safety (environmental, foriegn objects, temping, cooling, corrective actions, etc.) Provide support to the kitchen team in overseeing daily food safety tasks.  Review and manage all internal control documents to ensure they are being completed accurately and consistently (e.g., temperature logs).  Work with the facilities team to identify and prioritize necessary improvements to the kitchen.  Be knowledgeable on industry trends and best practices.

 
Supplier Management: 

  • Assist the Food Safety Director to:
  • Create and manage specifications for all food and packaging products purchased from suppliers.  
  • Find and onboard new suppliers, which includes conducting risk assessments and ensuring they are compliant with all applicable regulations and internal standards for safe food production.  
  • Identify and communicate internal controls necessary for each supplier.  
  • Audit food suppliers’ to ensure risk assessments are accurate on an ongoing basis.
 

Skills & Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience in QA and Food Safety, or formal food safety training.
  • 1+ years of experience training employees on food safety
  • 1+ years professional culinary experience in a fast paced role either in the service industry (i.e. restaurant management) and/or managing high-volume kitchen production (i.e. commissary kitchen)
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical and non-technical information to a wide range of audiences including management, employees, and vendors
  • Ability to prioritize and conduct in-the-moment risk assessments.
  • Must have NYC food handlers license or certificate
  • HACCP or PCQI certification mandatory,  SQF certification a plus.
  • Must have thorough written, communication, and analytical skills.  Must be able to accurately interpret statistical data.
  • Must be extremely well organized, detail-oriented, and effectively multitask. 
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) required
  • BA/BS in Food Science/Management a plus
 

Job Type: Full Time

Typical Hours:  Sunday - Thursday, 10 AM to 6 PM

Location: East Harlem, New York

Reports to: Food Safety Director

Compensation: $48,000 - $52,000
