Established in 2011, GrowGood is a nonprofit organization that operates a 1.5-acre no-till, regenerative urban farm and commercial greenhouse adjacent to The Salvation Army’s Bell Shelter in Bell, CA.  Our neighbor, partner and landlord, The Bell Shelter, is one of the largest homeless shelter's in the United States operating a comprehensive program providing housing and care for up to 500 men and women, a third of them are veterans. Funded by major foundations including the Roy & Patricia Disney Family Foundation, The Taper Foundation, REDF, and the Weingart Foundation, as well as many private donors, GrowGood has been recognized as one of L.A.’s most promising and innovative organizations affecting social change.  

GrowGood's farm consists of a half-acre of row crops, 14 raised beds, an orchard with 70 fruit trees, a 30' x 48' commercial greenhouse, as well as a California native plant garden with more than 300 draught-tolerant plants. Our farm and greenhouse operate to provide employment opportunities and training for shelter clients experiencing homelessness as well as a revenue stream to support our other garden-related programming. 

 

Job description


Responsibilities:

  • Be the keeper of our beautiful 1.5 acre farm, gardens and associated facilities including commercial greenhouse;
  • Work with various tenants and partners of the farm to ensure their operations meet our guidelines and program goals;
  • Collaborate with other staff members to manage our community farming program from a facilities and service standpoint;
  • Work with our advisors and the Board of Directors to develop a farm plan, and execute on the plan;
  • Continue and develop upon existing crop plans, crop rotation, succession and companion planting based on farm plan;
  • Keep accurate and timely harvest records, and other record keeping;
  • Order supplies, seeds and amendments in a timely manner;
  • Perform soil tests and manage soil health/fertility;
  • Oversee plant health of crops. Manage pests organically;
  • Manage the small orchard using organic/holistic practices;
  • Communicate regularly with colleagues and the Board of Directors
  • Provide training and education for students, volunteers and apprentices and farm workers as needed;

 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years organic farm experience;
  • Knowledge of fruit and vegetable production;
  • Greenhouse and propagation experience desired;

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs;
