Job description

The Fortune Society helps formerly incarcerated people re-enter life through education, employment services, housing and its food and nutrition program, Fortune Fresh.  The Fortune Fresh program serves more than 60,000 meals per year to Fortune program participants.  With food preparation comes the need to recover food waste.  Fortune is looking for a Compost Program Designer to design and launch an agency wide composting program including educational initiatives.  This position is part time and will report to the Director of Food and Nutrition Services.  

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Work closely with the Director of Food & Nutrition to fully design and execute an Organics Recovery program that includes:

-designing a separation and measurement system

-site design and procurement of necessary bins and materials;

-assist, train and monitor Food Service and Facilities staff on separation system.

 -set and monitor goals

-prevent waste during receiving, storing and meal prep by working with Chef to ensure service of appropriate servings and palatable meals

-recovering waste from Fortune’s commercial kitchens, pantries and gardens,

-educating key stakeholders

-collaborating with the DSNY and other waste collection agencies.

  • Form partnerships with food recovery organizations
  • Operate food drop off sites and oversee collection of organic waste
  • Mentor Food Service staff to inspire recovery behaviors and ultimately empower staff to advocate for food waste practices among clients and staff,
  • Overseeing mentoring, training and outreach activities for staff and clients.

 

Qualifications:
  • Highly passionate about removing organics from the waste stream, ability to articulate its importance to the wellness of people and communities. Candidate who can articulate the disproportionate impact of environmental harms on communities of color will do especially well in this position.
  • Prior experience designing and launching an organization wide compost program;
  • Enthusiasm for hands on, physically strenuous work while concurrently able to attend meetings with senior staff as needed.
  • Ability to achieve stakeholder buy-in including staff and clients. Help to ensure commitment to reducing waste among decision makers and those impacted by decision.
  • Ability to assess current waste management and develop realistic, achievable and sustainable strategies for organics recovery that will actually be used and remain in place.
  • Good written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Valid driver’s license.

 

Travel Requirements – May require some travel to our LIC location
