The Great Barrington Farmers’ Market (GBFM) (entering its 31 year) seeks a new manager for the 2021 season. The position is year-round, however, the majority of the work is done March-October. All candidates should be excited about the local food economy, well organized, be willing to work with both vendors and community members and be able to handle a multitude of tasks. In addition, any candidate needs a basic understanding of organizational finances.
Time Commitment
Must work Saturdays May-November
March-May 25-40 hours a week
June-October 16-20 hours a week
November-Feb 12-15 hours a week
Job Responsibilities-
Assign vendor spaces including spaces for daily vendors
Handle SNAP reimbursements
Pay musicians
Maintain a market diary
Ensure all market rules and regulations are adhered to
Ensure all state and town regulations are adhered to
Create agendas and meeting times for steering committee meetings once a month in off-season and one mid-season
Email vendors with updates and steering committee news
Maintain and purchase market equipment
Keep the market shed orderly and stocked with cups, trash bags, dog biscuits, etc.
Be a liaison with Property Owner, town of Great Barrington, and the Great Barrington Arts Market
Apply for sign permits, town permits and market insurance
Write once a month report with financial details from the bookkeeper and organize and deliver material to the bookkeeper once a month or weekly
Maintain information on all vendors- contact info, insurance, permits, market apps
Create and maintain a balanced budget and collect fees from all vendors and deposit in bank
Run a post-market season survey of all vendors
Maintain market email
Check the P.O. box in GB
Educate vendors on SNAP etc. and make sure they have the correct training
Assign jobs to vendors
Solicit and schedule musical entertainment
Schedule and envision market activities such as chef visits, tomato tastings, pie contests, children activities, etc.
Maintain the calendar for the community table
Seek out and handle sponsorships for the market with assistance from the committee
Maintain communication and education with other managers and resources through MDAR, Berkshire Grown, etc.
Strategize on additional revenue sources for the market
Write end of season report
Responsibilities on market days
Opening and closing market
Stay on site during the market
Ensure vendors fulfill market jobs
Collect SNAP and credit card transactions
Ensure all market rules and regulations are adhered to
Ensure all state and town regulations are adhered to
Answer questions from vendors and customers
Do regular customer counts
Maintain market grounds in a safe manner
Put up market table with information and water
Run activities and sales out of the market tent (such as raffles, bag sales, etc)
Resolve any disputes
