Company description

Obercreek Farm is a USDA certified organic, four-season farm located in the hamlet of Hughsonville in the Town of Wappinger, NY. We have been in operation since 2012, growing diversified vegetables, flowers, herbs, and hops year-round. We sell to wholesale accounts throughout the Hudson Valley and New York City both directly and through an online platform as well as to farm markets, a 100 member CSA and a Farm Stand. We grow all of our produce and herbs on a total of four acres, in rotation on a 14-acre property, including a half-acre of indoor production space.

Job Description

Reporting to the Farm Owner, the Farm Manager is responsible for the management, planning, and oversight of our farm, which includes the production of vegetables, herbs, and flowers using organic methods.

 

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, plan, schedule, and participate in all aspects of farm operations: seeding, greenhouse management, cultivation and field prep, transplanting, weed and pest management, harvesting, processing, and marketing crops
  • Develop a crop production plan for greenhouse, high tunnels, and fields to provide a quality selection of crops determined by market demand and production constraints.
  • Develop a marketing plan best suited to our production goals.
  • Create work systems to implement crop production and marketing plans using best practices
  • Monitor and be accountable for the progress of all field work
  • Hire, train, manage, and work alongside the farm crew as needed to ensure timely completion of daily tasks
  • Manage all aspects of farm record-keeping, including our USDA organic systems plan, budget, and income and expense tracking
  • Order materials and supplies
  • Perform repairs and maintenance on infrastructure and equipment
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment

 

Qualifications

  • A minimum of three years’ experience managing commercial farms
  • Experience growing vegetables using organic methods
  • Experience managing high tunnels, caterpillar tunnels, greenhouses, and field production
  • Ability to safely operate tractors and other farm equipment
  • Comfortably able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Valid driver’s license

 

Preferred Skills

  • Record-keeping for organic certification
  • Knowledge of social media
  • General business experience including some understanding of accounting
  • Experience with winter vegetable production

 

Schedule & Compensation

 

The Farm Manager is expected to work 40-50 hours during the main growing season with reduced hours in the winter. Compensation is commensurate with experience; anticipated starting range is $40,000 to $50,000 with subsidized on-farm housing.
